sometimes the greatest theories come from combining two great ideas.
Ive been thinking of superstring theory and the big bang.
the universe starts with a 1 d line...then the line splodes.

The Big Bang theory arose from red-shift. Basically, this states that everything is moving away from everything else (galaxies). Therefore, you are correct, that would mean everything 'started' at one place. But, red-shift can be influenced by electrical surges between two or more celestial bodies. Thus, trying to prove the Big Bang really happened, is impossible using red-shift as the foundation of the theory. Academia won't tell you that, though.
