Ocean black with love bugs in Fla
Ive been a lifelong resident of Florida and am always in or near the water. Thursday I witnessed something that neither myself or my father who has been here 50 years have seen. Went surfing and ocean was literally FULL of dead love bugs. Im not talking a few hundred scattered , Im talking black patches so thick and dense it looked like giant swabs of seaweed. Millions and Millions of the dead suckers. No way this is normal. I mean ive seen years where the bugs were bad and a few were in the ocean, and I mean a few like you may see a dozen all day. Thursday I stood on the shore and watched thick black clouds of them just keep rolling in for 2 hours. I tried to take pics but it was useless nothing showed up.

This year is the worst for lovebugs and they just wont go away. Usually 3-5 days and they are gone, this year we have have 7 outbreaks of lovebugs and this recent outbreak is now in day 11

Re: Ocean black with love bugs in Fla
seems to me there were A LOT LESS than usual LAST YEAR.

if the conditions are not right for them,
can some of them wait an extra year (or more) before hatching ?? thus a double dose ??

or did all the oil rains we had super-charge them somehow,
perhaps by killing off their competition ??

nothin special. was born in florida. happens on a regular basis. they show up in swarms. they die. life goes on (for everyone but the love bugs). id recommend avoiding the beach during that time. they pretty much ruin the trip.

It most certainly is NOT normal It does NOT happen on a regular basis. This occurrence on top of all the other mass die offs is an indication that there is an imbalance in the ecosystem, whether natural or otherwise.
Thank you for your time. I now return you to your regularly scheduled doom
