Underground fire burning in Coastal Georgia.
This is a local news story I saw (for me its local). I had no idea there could be a peatmoss fire here. Its been so smokey and I knew a fire was a few miles off but good grief, they said its 20 feet UNDERGROUND and unfightable. They just have to let it burn itself out. WEIRD. Just wanted to share a weird fire news with you.
(the video has more info than the article.)

Actually I was wondering if it was caused by a stray bomb from Ft Stewart. They have been bombing for a while. Really un-nerving to keep hearing the ground shaking booms and it NOT be a coming thunderstorm. No one has really said how it started for sure.

Those underground fires don't ever go out. Remember Silent Hill?

This is the real Silent Hill - Centralia, PA.

I always thought underground fires were only in coal mining country and I never saw any peat moss around here. Its all thin grey dirt or sand. Wont it cause major sink holes once it burns awhile?

Well Howdy Neighbors! I'm from McIntosh Co. and saw and smelled the smoke this morning. I thought it was coming from the Okefenokee which is also supposed to be burning.
But, we are having a downpour, so hopefully both of them are put out.

And yeah, about those bombing ranges rumblings. I've lived here for 7 years and never heard and felt them here like I have in the past couple months.

Re: Underground fire burning in Coastal Georgia.
I was just in Hinesville for lunch and the smoke was thick. I hope the rains put them out...can you imagine if they create big RED HOT SINK HOLES???? eeeewwwwwww..... And Im still wondering where the peat moss is and how it caught fire. I have never heard of peat moss anywhere around here. I thought that was either down on the Florida boarder or in Scotland.

Re: Underground fire burning in Coastal Georgia.
And by definition you wouldn't think moss would even burn, especially underground. As far as 3rd ID, unless they've changed in the last 2 years, their ranges (rainclouds 1-7) fire from the north side of 144 north towards sw chatham county. But there weren't any bombings from aircraft, just 120mm and smaller from m1a1's, bradley's, m119's and m109's.
