Denial is an interesting defense mechanism often used when the truth is too hard to accept. I spent my last session on Thursday evening listening to the wife of a survivor describe how her husband watched from the lobby of Building One as bodies splatted on the sidewalk in front of him. He was late for work and hadn't made it to the elevator yet. I've had actual survivors and eye witnesses in treatment as well. I'm a psychotherapist in the burbs of NYC. Threads like these upset me, but I understand people's need to think this way. Thinking about bodies dropping eighty stories and exploding in front of you is just too much to take I guess.
