every smoke alarm in the house went off at the same time and lasted a couple minutes
nothing was going on. no apparent power surge. no smoke in the house. no a/c or heater running. almost no appliances running. sitting here reading and every smoke alarm goes off at the same time and keeps beeping for about 2 minutes. then they all stop at once. this has never happened before that i know of. computer still works and never reacted to anything.

any ideas?

When I was a residential electrician, all the newer home smoke detectors got wired together. If you take one down you'll see that theres a black, white, AND a red wire. The red wire inner-connects all the smokes. That's why they all went off at once. They're not your mommas old smoke detectors. I hope this helps.

Vacuum them out. If they're the hardwired kind, they'll be linked together, so if one gets dusty and has a false alarm, they'll all go off.

Usually if they are wired together they will also have a back up battery...may want to check those out. Could be a bad 9-volt or just loose wiring on the 3 wires ... check the wire nuts, but turn the power off first.

Yep, make sure you kill the power from the breaker. NEC makes smokes have their own designated breaker. Usually if the battery is low they chirp. Good call on that one DOOMBREAKER!
