Need Advice GLP
Hey GLP,

I work for a real estate brokerage in Boston. There is a Broker here who is planning on starting his own company and has already confirmed that the majority of the Agents here will be working for him once this happens. I was offered a position to work for him and am sure I will get a pay raise (although not confirmed). I would feel bad leaving my boss as they are all going behind his back - not telling him this is going to happen. He might lose his business. Should I take part in this?

Yeah, I agree.

This is my first job and I'm only making a small wage - so a pay raise would be great. But I just don't know... It doesn't seem right.

Why would you leave your current position? For a pay raise that you aren't even sure of? I did that once....never got it. I left after 6 months. I had a better job before. Bird in the hand worth more than two in the bush....

Hmmm.

They say buisness should not be personal.

Then again is that the problem with the world?

A tough one OP, but i can't make the decision for you.

That's the thing, I don't make enough to live on here in Boston. I make $10/hr. I live in a halfway house and can support my needs now, but I leave soon. I need more money.

Re: Need Advice GLP
If you tell the current boss what´s going on, you should get a pay raise where you are. When everyone leaves, people who stay are going to be much more important to your current boss because he´ll be fighting to retain clients.

What the other guy is planning behind your current employer seems dishonest to me. Not fair at all.

Besides, someone who behaves that way does not sound like someone I would like to work for or would trust. I would be surprised if this kind of behavior leads to long term success.

I don´t think I´d consider going with him. Quite the contrary, I´d help the current boss protect his business. You´re working for him, he´s paying you and you should help him. Warn him about what´s happening and propose solutions to retain clients!

You likely will be rewarded. Sure you´ll have a clean conscience!

Thank you guys.

I'll be doing some serious thinking about this. I will confront the guy who offered me the job and tell him my issues. Then go from there.

I really appreciate the help.

Well anything Real Estate related is going to tank, as a start up right now.

With everyone else leaving your boss high n dry, id stick around, theres your pay raise and an already established business.
Id stay put OP. Anything in the real estate business is not going to make it right now.
Dont risk the sure thing with the unlnown, unless you want to couch surf or live out of your car.

I wouldn´t talk to the guy who´s plotting against your boss.

There is no way he´ll change his mind.

It´s very likely that he´ll see you as a threat from that point on. So, no chance of working with him, if you care to. But it´s also possible that he´ll try to discredit you in front of your boss. You risk losing on both sides and you stand to gain nothing.

Do not talk to the guy about what you think are the issues. This will likely not work in your favor.

You already know the answer to this by the way you phrase things "going behind his back" - inside you are not okay with this. Be true to yourself - the inner you is usually right.

I would wait and see how the new business does. If your current boss loses his business you might still be able to get a job with the "snake in the grass" and you will be known as someone who is loyal which doesn't hurt.
