Does eating salt really make you sick????
Does eating salt really make you sick? Lots of "health experts" say you should cut salt out of your diet. But why? Can't you just drink more water, which will dilute the salt, and then you will pee out any excess?

Sure SOME people have broken kidneys etc, and this probably wouldn't work for them. But for normal healthy people, wouldn't extra salt be eliminated from the body, from sweating, pee, etc?

If salt really was that dangerous, how come there aren't hundreds of people dying every year from Salt Poisoning, which they would get from swimming in the ocean or eating a big bag of chips?

It's actually part of the secret anti-iodine campaign. If you look at all the major foods and supplements that contain iodine, you are supposed to limit them or knock them out of your diet. Iodine has wonderful health benefits, and most people are iodine deficient. Lack of iodized salt adds to the deficiency.

Recent studies seem to indicate that in general cutting out
salt is unhealthy. There are some exceptions, but for the
majority it seems that a low salt diet increases mortality.

Wow, man. As long as you get your 2500mg per day (if you don't sweat) all is good. Two weeks without ANY salt and you will be dead. Google the "sodium-potassium pump" that EVERY cell in your body operates under.

Sodium establishes the ions (voltage) in the fluids outside of cell walls. Potassium establishes the ions (voltage) in the fluids inside of cell walls.

Waste inside of cells is attracted via voltage outside the cell walls. Nutrients outside the cell walls are attracted via the voltage inside the cells. This is how the waste/nutrient exchange happens.

You mess up that balance and you will starve the cells of nutrients or poison the cells with their own waste. Lots of water which is the "conductor" through which waste and nutrients run.

2500mg of sodium per day.
4500mg of potassium per day.
6-8 glasses of water per day.

or else.

Most prepared foods are loaded with salt, including baby food.
I once bought a jar of egg yolks from the baby food counter.
It was so salty that I couldn't eat it.
Likewise for a can of corned beef hash.

You don't eat salt directly.
If you did, yes it would make you sick.
A tablespoon full of it would kill you.
It would dehydrate your brain.

Anti-histamines dehydrate your brain, that's why they make you sleepy.

I don't eat zero salt. I just don't add it. There's a lot of hidden salt in food, but I don't eat a lot of processed stuff. Maybe I get enough from soy sauce and olives. I'll try adding a little salt for a week or two and see if I feel different.

Re: Does eating salt really make you sick????
I suffer from low blood pressure. In the summer time I have to take salt pills in order to keep from passing out from blood pressure crashes after sweating for a while.

I my case, a lack of salt can lead to death rather easily.

There are those who are prone to high blood pressure, thus taking more salt can lead to their having a deadly blood pressure.

It boils down to the person on how much salt they needs, however we all do need salt and most of us do not enough salt through just food alone, we need to use either sea or mineral salts.

Many other species also need mineral supplementation of salt(s). Cattle are given artificial salt blocks that they lick, however in more wild areas, cattle will see mineral salt deposits to lick/eat to supplement.

Do you just talk out of your ass all the time?

From wikipedia:

Death can occur by ingestion of large amounts of salt in a short time (about 1 g per kg of body weight).[36] Deaths have also resulted from attempted use of salt solutions as emetics, forced salt intake, and accidental confusion of salt with sugar in child food.[37]

1 Tablespoon full of salt is approximately 2.5 grams. The LD50 in rats was 3,000 mg because of their body weight

Antihistamines don't dehydrate your brain, they inhibit your histaminergic cells. The reason you get dehydrated it due to the diuretic effect.

Too much salt causes fluid retention; fluid retention can build up around the heart causing congestive heart failure. The heat sack has virtually NO GIVE to it. If it fills with fluid, you are in deep shit. 2400mg a day is the RDA of sodium (not necessarily salt). That equates to only one level tea spoon...not much at all if you think about it.

I am a heart patient and have done more than my share of research on how the cardiopulmonary systems work. When you've had your chest splayed open with a goth-like rib spreader at only 48 years old, you tend to take notice and educate yourself. Furthermore, I was fortunate enough to have one of the top surgeons as well as still having one of the top cardiologists in AZ, at least according to one of those "The best of the best" trade magazines...

People drink everything except water these days and that is what makes salt dangerous. The salt just builds up in the body.

If people would just drink water then salt would be no issue.

There is no substitute for water.

Salt makes you need to drink more water.

If there were no salt but the natural salt in your food you would only need 1/2 liter or about 1/8 gallon of water every day

man, people need to learn the art of moderation.
if you use some salt in your food you are not going to get salt poisoning ffs!

you don't usually drink the sea water, numb nuts, and if you do...you GET SICK. *shakes head*
i've never heard people say you should cut salt out of you diet...maybe added salt because most people eat WAAAYYYYY too much salt with their processed foods and shit. but unless you have a medical problem no health expert would say to cut out all salt and if you don't ingest ANY salt you will have serious problems.

Also, I had read that ordinary table salt (sodium chloride) is processed to such a high temperature that the sodium loses it's positive charge and the body does not recognize the sodium. To get the health benefits, energy, full spectrum of minerals and other trace elements, Himalayan or Celtic sea salt should be used.

It is reported unrefined salt LOWERS high blood pressure/ normalizes it.

No you NEED salt.

What you don't need is excessive sodium that is used as a preservative in packaged food. You do need salts that are naturally found in foods ans sea salt.

People eat too much cold cuts, jerky, fried stuff, condiments. They're loaded with salt that is used to hide sugar which is the real preservative.

There's a book by David Brownstein,
"Salt- Your Way To Health" you can read reviews here:
[link to www.amazon.com]

You really need a whole salt with the trace minerals in it like Celtic Sea Salt - that's a brand name, it's evaporated sea salt from Brittany, one place to get it is San Francisco Herb Company [link to www.sfherb.com]

Here's Joel Wallach on Salt from Dead Doctors Don't Lie:

[link to www.kingmaker.net]

"What's the first nutritional thing your doctor will tell you to give up when you get high blood pressure? Salt. Everybody knows that one, it has been ingrained in our heads. Well, they must think we are dumber than cows, because what is the first thing you put out for your cows, and it's about that big? A salt block. No farmer is going to be economically viable if you don't put a salt block out for your livestock. They're going to die. They're going to get their veterinary bill and they are going to go crazy. Now we're supposed to believe that we don't need salt, that we can get everything we need out of your lettuce and your whole wheat bread, and stuff like that. Well don't believe that one either. If you believe that, I've got some more ocean front property in Montana. Remember, those long-lived people put a big chunk of rock salt the size of a big black Concorde grape in every cup of tea, and they drink about 40 cups of tea a day cause they live at high altitudes where it is very dry, and they have to keep hydrated. And they put butter in their tea. They put two pats of butter and chunks of rock salt. They don't put the pink stuff or the blue stuff, or skim milk, or Creamora, or whatever it is. Guess what? The doctors who lived to be 58 tell you, "No salt, no butter". The people who live to be 120, they put in butter and salt. You have got to make some choices.

They took 30 million dollars of your tax money, and two years ago, after a 20 year study, they came out and said that they took 5,000 people with high blood pressure. They took them off their medication, and put them on a reduced salt diet, a restricted salt diet, and they all died. No big surprise. But somebody got a PH.D. degree and everybody was happy, right? But when they looked at this result, they said, "Oh, only 99.7% of the people didn't get any results from that before they died. 0.3% did get some results, dropped their blood pressure 1 point before they died, by restricting their salt." So the referees said, "Oh, doesn't matter. You might as well let high blood pressure patients eat salted peanuts, and dill pickles, and salt to their food to taste, cause it doesn't matter. In fact, worrying about the salt is more stress than taking the salt. "
