Geez, folks. Everyday the sinkhole news gets worse and worse.
Now they're worried about the whole area sinking. The whole salt dome!
I'm so sick of having to get ready to bug out from hurricanes and now this!

It is truly a horrible situation, El Q. I really believe this is connected to the DWH fiasco in the Gulf. Matt Simmons was spot on and look where it got him. A lot of people will have a lot of blood on their hands if this thing goes.

it aint just that- its the further weakening to other structures in the area....not too mention the potential loss of lofe and property/lifestyles...this has me literally boggled, WTF are they (the .gov) thinking....move people away NOW...if it doesnt happen...great- if it does...they have saved lives...

It would most probably set off a chain reaction. The whole of South Louisiana is delta and very unstable, riddled with salt domes. And if the methane hydrates are on the move from the Gulf, and it appears that they may be, this could be a disaster the likes of which have never been seen.
IMHO, this ties in directly to the DWH fiasco.

If it does collapse, I wonder what the seismic readings would be. What kind of a quake would it be comparable too?
