Weather Channel just said a big quake near Salt Lake, but I'm not seeing anything yet. Don't know how big, but they said they're waiting for damage reports.

Edit: Now Weather Channel says the USGS says there wasn't a quake in Utah.

Looks like a lot of damage from the 7.4 quake. Houses collapsed, telephone and electric poles down, a landslide that has caused some deaths. From the Weather Channel.

Wondering if maybe the seismo picked up the eq in Guatemala and someone looked at it wrong and posted it as in Utah, when actually it was the 7.4.. Or blasting going on in that area? Shoot I don't know, a guessing game.

There has been 6 or 7 aftershocks.

Update 18:16 UTC : Due to the death of 2 people, this earthquake becomes a CatDat Red earthquake. We feel very sorry for the family of the deceased. Lets hope that no other fatalities will be added to the current number. So far we have no numbers of injured but based on the image at right, we are sure that the damage will be considerable and that a lot of people will have been injured.

Today's 7.4 brought thought immediately to mind

VOLUNTEERS and marine experts are trying to save a whale beached off the coast of Tasmania, a day after a mass stranding on New Year Island where more than 80 dolphins and whales died.
For a third successive day, locals have discovered distressed animals beached on the islands northwest of Tasmania.
On Friday, 13 dolphins were found beached at Quarantine Bay on King Island, with eight able to be saved.
But the find was dwarfed on Saturday when 60 pilot whales and 20 bottlenose dolphins were found on nearby New Year Island.

Massive earthquake out of the Champerico, Guatemala coast – Red alert called by the president – At least 2 people killed

Earthquake overview : A massive earthquake happened approx. 20 miles (30 km) out of the Champerico coast. The preliminary depth of 33 km and the distance to the coast will have hopefully weakened the shaking considerably.

Massive earthquake M 7.4 strikes Champerico, Guatemala



Tectonic summary by USGS

The November 7, 2012 M 7.4 earthquake south of Champerico, Guatemala occurred as a result of thrust faulting on or near the subduction zone interface between the subducting Cocos plate and the overlying Caribbean and North America plates, near their triple junction. At the latitude of this earthquake, the Cocos plate moves north-northeast with respect to the Caribbean and North America plates at a velocity of approximately 70-80 mm/yr, and subducts beneath Central America at the Middle America Trench.

Over the past 40 years, the region within 250 km of the November 7 earthquake has experienced 50 earthquakes with M 6 or greater; two of these were larger than M 7. The first was a M 7.1 in December of 1983, in approximately the same location as the November 7 event, and resulted in no documented fatalities. The second had a magnitude of M 7.2, and struck a region just over 100 km to the northwest offshore Mexico in September 1993. There was one known fatality associated with the 1993 event. A M6.8 earthquake in October of 1979, 120 km to the east-southeast of the November 7 earthquake, resulted in 7 fatalities in Guatemala.

Update 18:58 UTC : The number of fatalities continues to go up – at the moment 8. Most of the fatalities have been reported inland, although the epicenter was located in the Pacific Ocean. San Marcos is at least 50 km from Champerico. The fact that at least 5 people were reportedly killed at San Marcos means that the damage will be very big and that more injured peaple will probably follow.
