New type of volcanic eruption


Unique to underwater volcanoes, neither effusive nor explosive



Scientists based in the UK and New Zealand have described a “new” type of volcanic eruption.

Volcanic eruptions are commonly categorised as either explosive or effusive. But now, in research published this month in Nature Geoscience, researchers at Victoria University, Wellington and the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton have uncovered a previously undocumented type of eruption in underwater volcanoes – by looking at tiny original bubble spaces trapped in volcanic rock.

Inside volcanoes, gases are dissolved in the molten magma as a function of the very high pressures and chemistry of the magma. In the same way that gases dissolved in carbonated drinks bubble up when you take the lid off, when magma is erupted as lava, the pressure is relieved and the gases exsolve to form small gas bubbles or so-called “vesicles”. In explosive eruptions these vesicles expand so quickly they fragment the magma, violently ejecting lava, which cools and degasses to form solidified pumice that can be sufficiently light to float on water....

Three volcanoes in Russia's Kamchatka continue to send steam and ash into the air while lava flows down their slopes. Plosky Talbachek volcano 3,140m, a part of two-dome volcanic pile (the second dome Ostry Talbachek is 3,689m), became active on November 27, 2012, some 36 years after precisely predicted "Great fissure Tolbachek eruption" in 1975-76. Plosky Talbachek has been erupting lava for weeks now. Two openings below the crater level were sending lava flows that reached 6 and 18km. The flows are glowing in the nighttime, which means that more and more masses of lava continue to arrive, reported Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team.

Fishermen in two boats rescued at least 15 persons off the seas of Caubian Island in Lapu-Lapu City after big waves in the area caused the boat they were riding on to capsize. Those rescued include four government employees from the Department of Social Welfare and Development in Region 7, five police officers, and a mother and her daughter. Investigation showed that the group sailed at 10 a.m. from barangay Caw-oy in Olango Island where the DSWD employees had a seminar and validation of new beneficiaries for the Pantawid Pamilyang Program in barangay Caw-oy. How the heck is a berm supposed to stop the sloughing of the hole? It might hold back the water, but that, in itself, might not be such a good idea. More water, more weight on the cavern.
