They were saying that they were about to do a nuke test. This could be what caused the 5.1.

News is reporting that the Russian defense ministry is saying that NK test is "over 7 kt".

That's about 40% of a Hiroshima bomb. By nuclear standards, a very unimpressive yield (the design yield of the Tsar Bomba was 15,000 times higher, and fielded US warheads are 1,000 times higher). That's especially problematic for NK when combined with the 3-4km CEP of the Taepodong 2. A 7kt yield will only destroy most civilian buildings in a 1km radius, so they really can't control what they'd be hitting - if they even can mate it to a missile at all, and assuming they could get past US missile defenses (having only a small number of primitive missiles, that's questionable).

I wonder what the planned yield was? I imagine they're working on reducing their warhead size while trying to maintain yield in order to mate it to their missiles.

There are various missile configurations they could use, and the further they want to go, the smaller the payload they can carry. But even if they could reach LA with it (highly unlikely), due to the high CEP, it could well end up landing, say, on an empty Dodger Stadium/Elysian Reservoir/Echo Park, with most of the energy of the blast wasted. Targeted at Honolulu (much more realistic range if nuclear tipped), odds are 3 to 1 that that the blast would be centered well over the ocean or in the mountains - quite possibly not even close enough to cause more than some fallout and temporary vision loss for those looking straight at it when it went off.

But nonetheless, while not enough of a threat to really be a nuclear *deterrent*, it's not something to be just ignored. It's most certainly still a very deadly weapon that - IF capable of being mated to a missle - has the potential to kill tens of thousands if lucky with targetting and if not intercepted (or if trucked or flown or shipped somewhere in secret).

The U.S. Geological Survey is reporting a 4.9-magnitude earthquake in North Korea, raising fears that Pyongyang may have gone ahead with its threat to conduct a third nuclear test. The USGS report put the epicenter of the quake in Kilju county, near where North Korea's Punggye-ri nuclear test site is located. South Korean officials would not confirm whether the widely anticipated nuclear test had taken place, but several officials says it is the "likely" cause of the quake. North Korea is not prone to seismic activity. South Korean President Lee Myung-bak has convened a meeting of the National Security Council in response to the suspected test. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is also holding an emergency meeting Tuesday. North Korea has threatened to carry out its third nuclear test in retaliation for United Nations sanctions that were expanded last month in response to a recent long-range rocket launch. Earlier Tuesday, North Korean state media threatened an unspecified "high-intensity" action, but did not mention any possible nuclear test.

Last fall there was a video from Wisconsin I think with the same noise I have to go back to work but I remember a barn in Canada was swallowed into the ground around the same time if someone wants to look for it. I'll look when I get home I think it was Sept/Oct same noise? Be careful EC
