6.2 earthquake off Baja is quickly followed by aftershocks

September 25, 2012 | 6:09pm LA Times

A 6.2 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Baja California has quickly been followed by at least two others.

The earthquake occurred in the ocean, 47 miles north-northeast of La Paz, off the coast of Baja California Peninsula in Mexico, the U.S. Geological Service reported Tuesday. That’s also about 604 miles south-southeast of Phoenix.

The shaker struck about 4:45 p.m Los Angeles time at a depth of 6.3 miles. Twenty minutes later, a second quake of magnitude 4.2 was recorded. A third quake, with a magnitude of 4.8, occurred 12 minutes after the second.

There was no immediate word on damage or injuries.

The area west of the Gulf of California, including the Baja California Peninsula, is moving northwestward with the Pacific plate at a speed of about 95 millimeters per year. Plate motion has pulled Baja California away from the coast, forming the Gulf of California and is the cause of earthquakes in that region, according to the USGS.

Mexico has a long history of destructive earthquakes. In September 1985, a magnitude 8.1 earthquake killed more than 9,500 people in Mexico City.

1700 Cascadia earthquake

The 1700 Cascadia earthquake was a magnitude 8.7 to 9.2 megathrust earthquake that occurred in the Cascadia subduction zone on January 26, 1700.

The earthquake involved the Juan de Fuca Plate underlying the Pacific Ocean, from mid-Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada, south along the Pacific Northwest coast as far as northern California, USA. The length of the fault rupture was about 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) with an average slip of 20 meters (22 yards).

The earthquake caused a tsunami that struck the coast of Japan, and may also be linked to the Bonneville Slide.

Evidence supporting the occurrence of the 1700 earthquake has been gathered into the 2005 book The Orphan Tsunami of 1700, by geologist Brian Atwater and others.

The evidence suggests that it took place at about 21:00 on January 26, 1700 (NS). Although there were no written records in the region at the time, the earthquake's precise time is nevertheless known from Japanese records of a tsunami that has not been tied to any other Pacific Rim earthquake. The most important clue linking the tsunami in Japan and the earthquake in the Pacific Northwest comes from studies of tree rings (dendrochronology) which show that red cedar trees killed by lowering of coastal forests into the tidal zone by the earthquake have outermost growth rings that formed in 1699, the last growing season before the tsunami. Local Indigenous American oral traditions describing a large quake also exist, although these do not specify the date.

The period for these earthquakes is arround 300-400 years

OK, can I tell you my belief concerning the big quake for the west coast...

I firmly believe there will be "2" quakes separated by hours or a few days.

The 1st one real bad...The 2nd one much, much worse.

Shallow, too.

And the sinkhole keeps growing...

Overnight, there was a 30’ x 50’ slough in on the SE side of the sinkhole (towards Texas Brine). The slough in took many trees and part of the road that was built to park excavators on to resume cleanup activities. This area has never sloughed in before as opposed to previous slough-ins that have taken place in the same spots along the embankment of the sinkhole...

And the seismic activity continues...
