Climate change unleashing pestilence omens: Bosnian capital hit by plague of flies

May 9, 2013 – BOSNIA – Sarajevo’s fire brigade was inundated with calls after a massive swarm of flies struck the Bosnian capital. Some people reportedly fled the city to escape the aerial invasion, according to local media. Bosnian fire brigade officials said that could do little to combat the flies but advised people to shut doors and windows in order to keep the swarming insects at bay. Likened to blizzards and leaving surfaces covered with a thick layer of crawling insects, the swarms have already struck a number of towns across the Balkans. Serbian press said that the insects cleared streets and squares of people in just a few minutes after they descended on the central town of Kraljevo on Monday night. Experts said rare climatic conditions with temperatures rising rapidly after a period of damp weather have created the perfect conditions for fly hatching. “We’ve had three or four generations hatching at once, and the predators such as birds and bats have not been able to respond by eating them all,” said Miodrag Rajkovic, an insect specialist at a Serb veterinary institute. “The best solution is to let nature take its course,” he added, but also said that if the flies keep on coming then the local authorities would have to resort to chemical pesticides. He also recommended that towns attacked by the flies should turn off street lighting, which acts as a lure for the insects. Strong 6 magnitude Iran quake near Strait of Hormuz kills child, causes damage
May 11, 2013 – IRAN – A strong earthquake of 6.2 magnitude hit southern Iran early today, killing one child and injuring at least 20 others in remote, mountainous villages, state television reported. The US Geological Survey registered the quake at 0738 IST, measured at 85 kilometres (52 miles) southeast of the town of Minab, located in the southern Hormuzgan province and off the Strait of Hormuz. The quake was registered at a depth of 36.44 kilometres (22.64 miles), the USGS said. A local emergency official said a two-year-old died of serious injuries.

Wall of ice destroys Manitoba homes, cottages

May 12, 2013 – CANADA - A local state of emergency has been declared in a western Manitoba municipality after homes in Ochre Beach were destroyed and seriously damaged by a wave of lake ice. Area officials told CBC News the wind pushed built-up ice off Dauphin Lake on Friday evening and caused it to pile up in the community, located on the lake’s southern shore. The piles of ice, which were more than nine meters tall in some cases, destroyed at least six homes and cottages, according to the Rural Municipality of Ochre River.
