The 24-acre Assumption Parish sinkhole underwent a periodic burp early Friday, the second in two days and the fourth in the past 21/2 weeks, parish officials said. The most recent burp was accompanied by an increase in tremors early Friday, along with other effects often connected with burps, including water movement and so-called "rain drop" bubbles on the lake-like hole’s surface indicating a gas release. John Boudreaux, director of the parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, said the tremors began to ease by Friday afternoon as they typically do once a burp event has eased. "I went out there (to the sinkhole), and it was almost like glass out there," he said. The increased tremors led to a halt in activity on the sinkhole Friday but Boudreaux said some work could resume Saturday morning. Also on Friday, Conservation Commissioner James Welsh ordered Texas Brine Co. to cease a type of earth-probing test aimed at seeing where gas is in the shallow rock under Bayou Corne.

Welsh ordered the company to provide by 5 p.m. Monday plans on the construction and abandonment of the test holes and other details, including how Texas Brine seals the holes. Scientists suspect the sinkhole was caused by the failure of a Texas Brine salt dome cavern. The cavern failure set in motion subterranean rock movements that set loose gas from natural pockets and created the sinkhole. It was found Aug. 3 in cypress swamp between the Bayou Corne and Grand Bayou communities. The one-time area of 350 people has been under evacuation orders since. In addition to the sinkhole, gas is being released from bubbling sites in area bayous and is thought to be gathered in an aquifer and even in shallower rock under the communities. Welsh’s order follows Boudreaux’s cease and desist order to Texas Brine earlier this week after residents complained about a plugged probe site leaking gas in front of homes on Sauce Piquante Lane. Boudreaux said he tested the hole and found leaking gas at a concentration that was approaching an explosive level. Sonny Cranch, spokesman for Texas Brine, said 41 of the holes were drilled in the community and only one leaked.

"Our ultimate goal is to remove the gas from the shallow aquifer and to know where it is," Cranch said, "and this was the technology we were employing to identify the location of that gas." The test involves driving a metal probe into the ground about 125 feet to check for gas. Once the test is finished, the hole is capped, Boudreaux said. The testing was the subject of complaints during a Tuesday community meeting in Napoleonville. The repairs completed by Texas Brine on Friday caused further irritation.

Update 13:46 UTC : Good and important news from the earthquake region. The ministry of transportation has ended all repair work at the National and Provincial roads in the earthquake region. This will enable relief and rescue trucks to transport the necessary equipment closer to the epicenter area.

Update 12:51 UTC : Something ER just learned now in reading the earthquake responsive : Veterinary emergency task group that works closely together with the Ministry of agriculture to assess asap all animal related topics, like prevent dead animals becoming sources sickness, getting abandoned animals to their owner, helping farmers manage their stock. This service is extremely important in rural areas where animals are often the only wealth of the owner. The teams include also veterinarians.

Update 12:15 UTC : Just like it happened in the Sichuan earthquake a couple of months ago, the Central Disaster Management team has taken over the lead in the rescue and relief efforts. Premier Li Keqying will overview personally every effort going on for rescue and relief. Earthquakes in China are divided into different categories. Some do only need local county response, others Province and the very big ones are managed by the Central Government.
An earthquake which is managed buy the Central Bejing Government has all possible power to engage whatever means possible. Army, police even temporarily allocation of civilian aircraft lies in their power.
We can make sure to our readers that this response is by far the most efficient in the world. Will it be perfect ? Never, but since we cover almost every earthquake in the world who needs assistance, we know what we are talking about. Congratulations to the Chinese response teams.

July 22, 2013 – INDONESIA - One of Indonesia’s most dangerous volcanoes spewed material a kilometer into the air near Yogyakarta, a university town and center of Javanese culture, sending hundreds of villagers fleeing. A short, massive rumbling was heard from Mount Merapi in the predawn hours Monday, the country’s disaster agency said, after which a cloud of ash and fine sand fell for several hours as far as 14 kilometers from the peak on the island of Java. By afternoon all activity had ceased and most of the evacuees from the mountain’s slopes returned to their homes. “This was not an eruption, just the sliding-down of volcanic material from the top of the volcano,” said Agus Hendratno, a geologist and lecturer at Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta. He said this is a common process in which part of the volcano’s lava dome collapses, releasing ash and volcanic material. “I went outside my house at 5 a.m. and was surprised to see the terrace covered in a fine ash,” he added. “It kept falling until around 8 a.m.” Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman for the disaster agency, said Merapi’s alert level remains normal, and that scientists are monitoring the volcano to gauge whether the activity could presage a lava eruption. Merapi, nearly 3,000 meters high and about 25 kilometers north of Yogyakarta, is Indonesia’s most seismically active volcano. An eruption in 2010 released poisonous gases and blanketed the region in ash, killing more than 300 people and temporarily displacing hundreds of thousands. Indonesia, which sits along a series of major fault lines dubbed the “Ring of Fire,” is home to more than 100 active volcanoes. The United Nations lists Merapi as one of 16 world-wide that pose especially serious threats because of their activity and the size of nearby populations. Japan’s Sakurajima volcano shaken by large explosive eruption

July 22, 2013 – JAPAN – A strong vulcanian explosion occurred last night at 11:02 GMT (20:02 local time), following several hours of near complete calm at the volcano. A loud cannon-shot bang accompanied the explosion, which generated a large mushroom cloud that reached 12,000 ft (3.7 km) altitude and engulfed the NE half of the Sakurajima peninsula and was followed by several smaller ones within about half an hour. The volcano and much of the surrounding areas remained under the ash plume for several hours until it started to clear up again. In the hours after the explosion, the Showa crater continued to emit ash plumes in often near-continuous pulses, sometimes reaching several 100 m height, but with no visible incandescence or audible sounds. –Volcano Discovery

Large explosions at Ecuador volcano: An increase of activity occurred yesterday. IGPEN recorded 3 strong pulses of volcanic tremor since midnight 20-21 July (local time), which were accompanied by strombolian activity and strong explosions that produced loud roars, heavy gunfire sounds, and vibrations that rattled floors, windows and doors of houses in areas nearby. Some were heard even in the Tungurahua Volcano Observatory (OVT), located 14 km north of the volcano. The largest explosion yesterday at 14h18 (local time) generated an eruption column of 5 km height moving east. Although so far there have been no new pyroclastic flows, this could likely happen in the near future. Ash fall occurred in the area of Manzano, Choglontus, Tisaleo, Cevallos and Mapayacu. In between the explosions, constant strombolian activity with the ejection of incandescent bombs, some of which rolled down the slopes could be seen at night. Scientists have sparked a fresh debate over what triggered Indonesia's Lusi mud volcano, still spewing truckloads of slime more than seven years after it leapt catastrophically into life. Published in the journal Nature Geoscience, the study strengthens the argument by gas company PT Lapindo Brantas that the disaster was caused by a distant earthquake, not by its drilling crew as some experts contend. Lusi, located in the Sidoarjo district of the island of Java, erupted on May 29, 2006 in the middle of a rice field. It has destroyed 13 villages, dozens of factories and shops and a highway, prompting the government to build dykes 10 metres high to try to contain its spread. Nearly 50,000 people were displaced. The new research, by a team led by Stephen Miller at the University of Bonn in Germany, suggests the eruption was caused by the 6.3-magnitude earthquake that occurred two days earlier near Yogyakarta. Even though the two events were 250 kilometres apart, the rock formation at Sidoarjo has a shape and structure that acted rather like a lens, amplifying and focusing the wave of seismic energy from Yogyakarta, according to their computer model.

The jolt of energy would have liquefied the source of the mud, causing it to be injected into a fault connected with a deep hydrothermal system. This superheated blowout feeds the eruption today, goes their theory. Asked to comment on the study, British geologist Richard Davies pointed to the daily drilling reports from the Lapindo Brantas team at Sidoarjo. It showed their gas exploration was going awry, Davies said. On the day of the eruption, the drillers acknowledged that they were having problems in stabilising pressure in the hole, a routine procedure that uses injected fluids, as they sought to withdrew their drill bit, he said. That, and the lack of protective casing around the hole, "was like pulling the cork out of a champagne bottle," causing a "kick" of high-pressure mud to blow from the hole, Davies, a professor at Durham University, told AFP in a phone interview. "When the Yogyakarta earthquake occurred, nothing happened in the well. The pressure in the well was already many orders of magnitude bigger than the pressure changes due to the Yogyakarta earthquake," Davies.

"They've come up with an elaborate geophysical model but I think they've ignored the more obvious data," said Davies said. Seismologists have widely, but not unanimously, sided with his explanation. Some note that much larger earthquakes had previously occurred closer to Sidoarjo yet not caused any mud volcano. At its peak, Lusi disgorged 180,000 cubic metres of mud a day. The rate has now fallen to between 15,000 and 20,000 cubic m per day, according to the government's Sidoarjo Mudflow Mitigation Agency. This is roughly equivalent to between six and eight Olympic-sized swimming pools of slime per day. Amein Widodo, a geologist from the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology in nearby Surabaya city, said it was impossible to predict how long the volcano would keep erupting. "The amount of mud has reduced a lot, but having seen other cases in Java, it's possible it could erupt for more than 100 years," said Widodo. [link to hisz.rsoe.hu]
