Do you support perp walks ? Yes or no ?

European jurists say that perp walks undermine the presumption of innocence, because it makes people look guilty before they are actually tried. They say it is essentially a political statement on the part of the police department.

Also, Lee Harvey Oswald was killed by Jack Ruby during his perp walk.

The debate on perp walks became apparent after DSK's arrest, because people ere shocked to see him handcuffed before his trial even started.

I'm against them, to a point. When the "police" announce to the press ahead of time that arrests will be made and that a certain exit will be used, that does allow a trial "in the court of public opinion" to convict before any testimony is heard and is wrong, but if its a celebrity showing up for a scheduled court date and cameras are there, then that is fine.

You think it's okay to treat celebrities differently ?

no, it would be the same for anyone. Court schedules should be public records and if you or I or anyone else were scheduled for a court appearance newsworthy enough and photographers showed up, that's Ok in my book.

Its the scheduling of the arrest to occur with the most media coverage, to either allow the "police" to pat themselves on the back or infer guilt through the news coverage, that is wrong.
