An underground shelter is much better. You'd also have to deal with people giving up private property to build shelters. But think of this: It might be 200 years before another tornado touches down in any specific town. It's not practical. Ive always wondered why they dont build underground in tornado alley.. in Coober Pedy in South Australia, most of the town is underground, granted its because of heat, however it would surely work on the same principal.. i can not believe that the councils and government dont make it mandatory for tornado shelters to be built in homes, similar to the cyclone ratings we have to have here in cyclone regions... Sometimes people need to be told what to do for their own safety.. Pics of coober pedy: [link to www.google.com.au] You usually go well over 100 years between tornadoes occurring again in the same town. It's not like the hurricane areas where you know that you're going to get hit in the same place every few years. Also, that particular area is also not too far from the Madrid fault. Underground homes would be tombs. By the same token, houses over 1 story in height shouldn't be built in earthquake prone areas. Brick and mortar buildings shouldn't be allowed in earthquake prone areas, since wooden homes are so much safer. Then you look at areas prone to forest fires. They shouldn't allow wooden homes. But there are places that are prone to earthquakes, tornadoes and forest fires together. It goes on and on and on. You can only do so much and this country has become too much of an overbearing nanny state as it is. I see your point, though. Speaking of underground buildings, there's a large underground office complex in Kansas City, MO about 160 miles north of Joplin. The place is amazing. Quoting: with all the litigators in america, why dont the councils (or civil group responsible for building codes) get sued when the buildings they approve get flattened by the local weather? Hey Guess what, There are many places in Missouri that do not have building codes. A person can actually go out and build anything they want. If you look at the houses and buildings that were demolished you might notice that they were in projects, made of pine, tin room, modern day garbage. The older homes in Missouri are made of Oak and cedar. Places like Walmart are nothing more than shells with roofs laid on them. We live here because we don't like civil groups or whoever telling us how to build our own home like they do in Californicate. |

Quoting: AbaddonIt wouldn't be that expensive and give people equal access to safety on a moments notice. Cinder block wouldn't hold up. An underground shelter is much better. Sometimes people need to be told what to do for their own safety.. Pics of coober pedy: [link to www.google.com.au] Australia poster, the very last thing we need in the USA is government mandated shelters in our homes. Housing is already expensive enough without additional costs. If the government wants to "suggest" the best type shelter, that's fine. But please, no mandated, forced increases in government regulations. I can see consideration for a "safe" place in apartment housing, but not in private homes. The cost to add one post construction is $4000. During construction, it would be less and could be financed in with the mortgage. Just a few $$ per month extra. I'm really regretting that I didn't add one at my house when I built it. That $4000 is hard to drop, but to look at it as a few extra $$ each month is easier to deal with. But, I agree with you that apartment complexes where people on the upper floors don't have access to a ground floor room/closet and trailer parks should be required to have safe rooms or a community bunker. A common laundry room area placed underground or in a central location would be perfect and not that much more expensive to reinforce. Even in apartments that have in-unit laundry hook-ups, you could have a reinforced weight room or other common area. |

Down in Australia do you have the government doing everything for you? Do you not accept personal responsibility for outcomes? Ahh no it wasnt the same poster, I was the one who suggested councils make tornado shelters as part of the building code like they do here in queensland for cyclone rated homes.. you must have a minimun of a category 3 cyclone rated frame and foundation etc to be allowed to build a house in coastal queensland.. there is nothing wrong with protecting people from themselves.. besides.. when the shit hits the fan its the taxpayers who pay for the clean up anyway.. of course there are once in 50/100 year events which probably no one can prepare for however, if you live in an area like queensland, which has cyclones every year.. tornado alley, which has tornado's every year.. florida which has hurricanes every year.. I see no reason why you shouldnt have to foot the bill to create a sturdy and safe shelter for you and your famiily so other tax payers dont have to do it when a storm/tornado does hit.. just my opinion.. no need to reply with name calling..
