They are comparing today with the big breakouts earlier this year..

SPC "high risk" days in 2011

Apr. 16: "Carolina Outbreak" (69 tornadoes...32 in NC...13 in VA...26 killed)

Apr. 26: "Mid-South Outbreak" (56 tornadoes....1 killed in AR)

Apr. 27: "Southeast Outbreak" (232 tornadoes...315 killed)

It lays out all the ingredients that makes a serious outbreak for strong twisters..worth the read.

Most local news stations in the midwest also have links on their web pages that you can have them text you when severe weather is in the adjacent counties and moving towards you. These are very handy in hill country where visibility is limited. Be safe and be prepared..I know we all think this can never happen to us, but the fact is it can…I have experienced several tornados here in KS. I`ve seen everything from F5` to small f1`s...I`ve helped pick up the damage after they have moved through and it`s crazy what a little ol F2 twister can do...My father was a first responder to the Udall, Ks tornado years ago..The stories he has told me about that experience are frightening and still haunt him till today...Just be weather smart...

cheers

There really are alot of factors to look at...Night twisters are the big killers so I think the text from the local news station could be a life saver for alot of folks..rain wrapped tornadoes usually kill alot of people also..wherever visibility is limited is where the most people always get killed..a person can get out of their way if they see them coming...

My cousin was killed in a night twister. Daughter was found outside wrapped in housing insulation but survived. Wife found outside under fridge-mattress with both hips broken.

I believe the bathtub was a mile away. Snuck up in the night in the first week of January.

Just unreal.

On the material side of things---video tape or take pictures of all the rooms in your house..any special antiques you might have, guns, ect...The latest appraisal of your home and property..reciepts for higher priced items in your home..All this will come in handy for the insurance folks should you ever get hit...

""bring in the tomato plants"

Seriously...Keep important paperwork organized and in your safe place...

Good Point!

The thing is to make copies and send to various friends/family. I had done this but neglected to share them. Kept them in a nice safe place in my home.

I come home one day and the entire house is consumedin flames. Not only did I lose evrything in the house, I lost all the pictures I would need of what I had.

Wow...sorry to hear that...When my Mom was alive I would have to call her everytime we had tornado warnings out because she would sleep right through them..At night we don`t mess around. We go straight to our shelter. During daylight hours we`ll step outside and watch them...

Thanks for sharing---I`ve had two close calls with them but luckily both times they missed my house...I do believe most folks stay aware of the weather in the midwest but I don`t think alot of them are prepared..

[WICHITA KS]

Two months ago one of my coworkers became an official storm spotter/chaser. From the magnetic signs and strobe lights on his sedan to his latest toy [an incredible laptop loaded with professional NWS software] this guy is pumped and monitors radar constantly when he should be doing his regular job [did I mention he's a federal employee like myself?] - oh, I'm not really bitching... I'm actually GLAD to have him and his technology around!

Yesterday he got just a little freaked out by what he was hearing from other spotters in the field as they tracked the cells heading once again toward Joplin. But, the disturbing chatter all centered around what's coming up TODAY. The single word that startled him was "armageddon." apparently field spotters were -to a man- predicting that this afternoon, here in SC KS we're going to get royally hammered from a supercell that will come roaring up out of OK that will be as severe as the ones Missouri has faced the past couple of days.

So, batten down your hatches, put fresh batteries in your radios and hang on tight, Kansas!

An interesting sidenote concerning my buddy: He's a Mormon, and last year the Mormon church began formally sponsoring a program to encourage members to get their Ham radio licenses and, -specifically here in the plains states- to become storm spotters! This is why he got into it in the first place and he was one of SEVEN in his Wichita church that did so. Church elders informed them that this year was supposed to be an incredibly active tornado season and so far... they've been correct. In researching the Mormon programs along these lines [just to see if it was true] I discovered that the DHS has actually consulted Salt Lake City on how to setup more civilian Ham radio operations in the general public! Now, THAT'S an endorsement, Folks!

My personal cerebral prep was last night as I rewatched the TV-miniseries CATEGORY SIX: DAY OF DESTRUCTION and watched as Las Vegas and Chicago were wiped out [not that the loss of Vegas would be such a BAD thing! But Chicago, DAMN!] - I was pretty surprised at how some of the dialogue in that film mirrored closely what our local weatherboys have been saying the past few days. Now, where's Randy Quaid when we need him?

Amen to that ! I am in Northwest Indiana by the Chicago line. My daughters school is right down the street from my house. I can literally run down the street and get her. I told her if they have a code gray, to not just go in the hall, but duck into a closet or bathroom. I do not like their plan for the students. Instead of them all going to the basement, which is only halfway below ground,a shallow basement, they have the kids from the 2nd floor go to the 1st floor and huddle in the hallways. IMO, ALL of the kids should go to the basement.
As for the elderly, my 88 year old mother, who lives by herself, unplugged her weather radio that I bought her, and put it away. She said the thing going off all the time, bothered her.:( Three years ago, she came within 3 houses of losing her house when the river flooded.:( Three weeks before the flood, a tornado came through her community, and damaged houses right down the street from her. All I can do is call her if we get a warning, and hope she will listen to me. :(

Yep...My wife is done by noon everyday and it has always been our plan to go get him if he is at school. We have a built in shelter under our front porch...Putting the kids in a hallway supported by cinder blocks is true BS...an F4 or F5 would demolish it..

This is an excellent idea. It really helps you remember what all you have when making insurance claims and can sometimes be submitted as proof. Go through every single thing you have and detail it all on video. Then, be sure to give a family member in another town a copy of this. You can upload to a private YouTube account for an e-copy available whenever you get settled or a can access a computer again. It's also a good time to scan (make electronic copies) of important documents and burn to a disk(s). Make a copy and give this also to a trusted family member in another town. You could also send these via e-mail to yourself if you have a secure e-mail address with secure hosting. While you're at it, burn some of your more precious pictures to a disk to give to that out-of-town family member or upload them to a secure website.

I am in SC Kansas and really freaking out today. I have lived here my whole life and the Andover tornado almost took out my cousin and I was really close to the F4 tornado that took out Haysville on May 3, 1999. Even after that I did not have the foreboding feeling that I have had the past few days. When I saw Joplin when it first happened I had a gut feeling it was going to be bad and I have the same gut feeling about this. I saw that Dr. Forbes raised our TorCon up to a 9 - a 90% chance of a tornado - I am also located in his WHITE ZONE which he says is in the greatest danger and that we could have violent long lived tornadoes. We do not have a basement so our plan has always been to get into the interior bathroom bathtub - however I don't think that will save us - my neighbor two doors down knows a man one street over who is an older man with a basement - he told her if the sirens go off he will leave his door unlocked so she can come in - I told her we would come too and say Hi we don't know you but thanks for letting us come in. Needless to say the way they are talking - I am very concerned. Any positive thoughts any prayers, anything you want to send this way would be appreciated!! Thanks

Fortunately here in our area...Wichita vicinity...You can see the twisters coming..stay tuned to KFDI...get in your car and drive SE away from the storm..if it`s rain wrapped or at night then find shelter..tornadoes typically move NE but that isn`t always the case. In a vehicle your best bet is to get south of the storm by making a wide circle...if we get f4`s or larger you better be underground...be smart, pay attention to KFDI and stay out of it`s way...
