Re: ^^^^^^Unit 1 nuclear power plant Hukuzima ( two hundred and one Sv / h ) ^^^^^^
I hate when people say this isn't worse than Chernobyl. THIS IS 10x Chernobyl. 4 reactors in meltdown for 2 months or one reactor fire that lasted a few hours.
 Quoting: komi54

Stop spreading bullshit. Please? Do you even know what happened in Chernobyl? Obviously not so let me enlighten you - all the safeguards were turned off to test the cooling ability of the reactor systems and this resulted in a catastrophic explosion. Water turned to steam so fast that the reactor quite literally blew off the upper part of its superstructure and the core of the reactor was exposed to the outside wall. If you looked down from the roof inside the building, you would see nuclear reaction happening with your very own eyes. Then of course you would die a moment later as Chernobyl pushed out 200000-300000 sieverts/hour. The entire inside mass of the reactor was blown out and the radiation exposure was at unreal levels. Forests actually glowed red due to the radiation and even after all these years and cleanup, some spots put out radiation in hundreds of sieverts per hour. It was so intense that the reactor had a bright blue light going in up the air at nights.

Nothing like that has happened in Fukushima. The core rods of reactors 1,2 and three have melted. At least the first reactor has a complete meltdown. The boiling nuclear matter is sitting in the containment dome under the reactor superstructure and cooling off. It might very well melt through the concrete floor and enter soil, reach the water streams in the earth and then you will have your Chernobyl. Not before. If it does not melt through, it will sit in the containment dome and cool off. It will take years before anything can be done about it, as it is currently putting out hundreds of sieverts per hour. Inside the containment area, not outside the reactor. No-one is denying that the reactors have melted down. They have. But that meltdown is nothing like the event that human idiocy caused at the Ukraine plant.
 Quoting: The Estonian

They already admitted there were holes in containment. This is going to release more radiation that Chernobyl end of story your the one spreading bullshit.

i love the part where 'The Estonian' claims chernobyl let out 200,000- 300,000 siverts/hour of radiation.(with no source to validate the claims naturally)

Yet The MIT Nuclear information hub estimates it at;
300 sieverts per hour in the vicinity of the reaction core, to 0.03-0.05 sievert per hour in the control room and 0.1 sievert per hour in a nearby unit.

Estonia - you mean a blue glow at night like this?
This accident is far worse than Chernobyl. Four reactors, each one 4x the size of Chernobyl + Plutonium + 8,000 tons of fuel in the pools - 60 days later and nothing being done to stop the radiation. Just be patient, soon half of Japan will be uninhabitable.
Seems like someone doesn't want to give up the title of worst nuclear disaster in history.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1319233

How many more times are we going to repeat this dance? Chernobyl blew up. Quite literally the reactor blew up. The upper portion of the reactor was blown clean off and during the explosion, the inside of the reactor was made visible to the eyes. If you looked down, you would see the nuclear reaction happening with your own eyes. And then you would die.

Fukushima has not blown up. It can't blow up if the extraordinary does not happen and the floor holds. If it does not, then you will have your doom when the boiling mass meets water, creates incredible amounts of steam and blows the whole place up like a nuclear volcano. Then by all means and purposes we are truly fucked. Until that happens, at least try to understand the difference between the reactors that were used in Ukraine and are used in Fukushima and what really is happening here.

If we have a steam explosion (like the one that happened in Chernobyl), it will level the entire plant. We are talking about the end of Japan as we know it. China and Korea will get hit as well and heaven save the world if a big typhoon decides to move over the area. There are a bunch of really big reactors just a stone throw away from the Fukushima Daiichi plant and if the Fukushima area is gone, those reactors will go unchecked as well. Sure, workers might stay in the plant to try to cold stop the reactors but they will die in a matter of hours. Perhaps a day or two and as far as I know, it takes weeks and even months to completely shut down a reactor.

The radiation would be off the charts for hundreds of years. Absolutely no-one will see that plant and the area with their own eyes for a very long time. Trust me, that's a scenario you don't want to see unfold.

The chance of it happening is actually smaller than the chance it will happen. Which is somewhat good news. Reactor 1 had a meltdown 16 hours after the quake and it was discovered/made public only about... hmm, 2 weeks ago? I remember there being a pinned thread about it here. I am an optimist - I would give the steam explosion a chance of one against ten.

The Estonian is on point with his description of Chernobyl.

This is well documented information.

The fact that the Fukushima doomers don't know this as a matter of course, calls seriously into question your judgement of the series of events at FUK-#1 and consequently your assessment of the current situation.

I think the Estonian and Joe Neubarth are on point, more serious doom is currently on hold pending corium-ground water interaction. hmm

Meltdowns absolutely... as well as fuel rods scattered all over the place.

What made Chernobyl particularly bad was that a huge amount of the core became vapor and burned along with the highly radioactive graphite control rods... in this case, there is a good reason to suspect the containment vessels, which chernobly lacked completely, have done a lot of work in containing the bad stuff.

So compare, this: chernobyl open air bondfire of radioactive material, Fukushima-radioactive material scattered about, but staying reasonably in one place around the site, and most of the reactions happening down near the bases of the containment structures.

What's hard to comprehend is that the scattering of the fuel rods and the melting of the core into the base of the containment structure actually did the world a favor in terms of reducing the chance of radionucleotides being vaporized and put into the atmosphere.

The proof is in the radiation readings... which of course, anyone on earth is free to say are altered to fit someone's sense of reality. afro

Bottom line .
no matter what life as we know it has changed .
our world will not be the same in our lifetime.
our kids future dream has been shattered.
Its devastating and surreal .
We have two choices pretend like its not happening
or live in a radical way and try to jump through the hoops.
Pandora's box has been opened.
you can move to the southern hem if you have money but many other signs are pointing to the end of times anyways.
its time to get close to the ones you love and enjoy what there is left.
stay away from Milk and tap water.
be thankful for the little things .
its all slipping slowly away.
