New York's outdoor smoking ban: Will the world follow
New York is introducing an outdoor smoking ban. But could the UK and other countries follow suit, asks Tom de Castella.

It is a city heralded for attracting incomers from around the world, but New York has just become less hospitable to one group - smokers.

Under measures approved by local authorities, swathes of outdoor public places including beaches, municipal parks and even Times Square have become tobacco-free.

And with smoking legislations, as with so much else, where New York leads, the rest of the world can find itself following.

After the city banned smoking in restaurants, bars and clubs in 2003 - itself following Los Angeles, which introduced similar curbs a decade earlier - it helped drive a global trend.

France, India, Ireland and Italy were among the nations which introduced bans after New York. Scotland prohibited smoking in enclosed public spaces in 2006 and the rest of the UK followed the year after.

So it is not surprising that the latest development in New York is attracting global interest.

Re: New York's outdoor smoking ban: Will the world follow
I wish governments world wide would agree on chemicals being removed from tobacco - thus people can smoke wherever they want, whenever they are allowed.
But noooooooh - first they'll make you addicted, then ban you from any public place, put you back in line if you have some lung complaint, make you look like a criminal with all doom written all over packages, make you pay tax like there's no tomorrow - and finally make you suffer 'cause your not allowed to smoke anywhere, not even out on the streets.

F-ing B.S. as far as I'm concerned. This has to do with the privilidge for what you pay for - and you pay enough as a smoker. If they want to treat smokers as criminals, then stop over-taxing first, and take the chemicals out of the tobacco!!

This is so retarded it is not even funny.

Just think of the buildings that will allow smoking. They get all of it now, which means people in those buildings breathing that air are basically smoking all the time.

At least the smokers will kill each other off faster, hopefully the non smokers are smart enough to stay out of these buildings.

The state has no business legislating people's habits or their morality. I don't want my tax money spent to enforce and promote an authoritarian state in which we are told what to eat, drink, and what medicines to take. People will push back.

Please remember that if all smokers actually would stop buying cigarettes tomorrow, most (local) governments will have a serious tax problem. That's why I don't understand the hostile approach.

Another "War on" something. Those are never-ending, very profitable, and allows them to curtail liberties in an effort to "win" the unwinnable.

By the time that the majority realizes that it is better to let someone kill themselves than hand over your own liberty trying to stop them....it will be too late.

We'll see how strict NY's smoking bans remain if there's another severe recession. Same with all the other places that have really clamped down the past decade.

The source of revenue is too easy and lucrative - just watch, if there's a sharp decline in the economy and too many bars/restaurants closing they'll loosen the regulations or turn a blind eye to existing ones.

We nipped that little problem in the butt when Texas drove the prices up.
I now use an e-cig. My hubby is buying loose tobacco, no chems in it. Not only are we not paying those taxes, we've cut the cost to about 20% of what it was.

The hostility is ridiculous considering how much more smokers pay in taxes, which fund a whole lot of things the non-smokers and their kids are enjoying.

Well, not on our dime anymore.

You apparently also do not understand the power of an addiction.

Why all smokers do not buy fresh tabacco and roll their own is the same reasoning, addiction to the convenience of not having to do that extra little bit of work for themself, at the price of their health and wealth.

Some people just can't resist being retarded, especially in a society where they are programmed to be just that.

Psh, it's already like that. Good thing they don't yet have the resources to enforce a lot of this bullshit, right?

And by the awakening of the general populace, which is happening, they never will.

Slave planet!

People have been smoking since the aliens gave us fire.

No one should be able to smoke because we are SO concerned about your health. No problem feeding everyone gmo, chemical laced foods and flouride water.

When you see that trading is done, not by consent, but by compulsion—when you see that in order to produce, you need to obtain permission from men who produce nothing—when you see that money is flowing to those who deal, not in goods, but in favors—when you see that men get richer by graft and by pull than by work, and your laws don’t protect you against them, but protect them against you—when you see corruption being rewarded and honesty becoming a self-sacrifice—you may know that your society is DOOMED. - Ayn Rand Atlas Shrugged

Smoking affects more than just the smoker. Smokers have no right to impose their smoke on non-smokers and children. Even outdoors, it is annoying to non-smokers.
