European cities are built around Catholic cathedrals ... American cities didn't have Catholic cathedrals when they were first built.

A lot of American cities aren't much older than 100 years or so. They all had urban, mixed-use town centers and character to them until the car companies bought and closed all the trolley car companies, developers raped the country side with spec housing (won't even build a sidewalk because it's a liability), then corporations filled in the gaps with shopping and fast food. No city planning, just free capitalism that creates the ugliest shit-hole cities in the world. The town voted ugliest city in England looks basically like a typical American town. I'm an architect, I spent some time in Europe, love the old vernacular, public transit, history. Living in USA is depressing. And Americans don't appreciate good design. At my job one of my projects was a fucking metal building!!

I guarantee I've lived in more states than you have and I've seen some nice buildings here and there but nothing overall to compare to a typical european city. Asswipe.

There is some good architecture in America. I used to do Limestone work when I was in Chicago.

Most suburbs remind me of ant colonies, fuck that, houses 10-20 feet away from each other, some suburbs so bland that they only utilize 2 building designs. Bleh.

I refuse to ever live in an ant colony suburb again.
I currently live in the middle of a major city full of skyscrapers. It's not too bad but the best stuff was built 100 years ago. Except for the public library, which is new and awesome.

My city is one of the better ones in America but it doesn't begin to compare to the beauty you see in Italy, Spain, Switzerland or any other european country.

I lived in 18 different cities by the time I was 16. Then I spent years traveling around the States. I'm mid-forties and have been tonot just every state, but numerous cities in each state.

I live in Chicago, and I think it has some of the most amazing architecture around, especially in the suburbs right along the lake.

However, maybe the denizen of the land in 500 plus years, may find that our cities are quaint and lovely....some, anyway. But over all I do agree that much of the landscape has been blighted, but there are some really beautiful sections of our country.

you can defend our country just fine on many topics, but this one... its just a fact.. america's architecture is by-and-large butt ugly and cheap looking... ESPECIALLY compared to europe.

Generally, US cities do need better planning. Euro cities are very nice. Europeans are more cultured, but I see that fast food joints and garbage food are making inroads.
