Do some research, they literally worked them to death, and had to keep importing new slaves just to keep the population up. My double-great grandfather had slaves, 15 to be exact. All but six were over the age of 55 in 1860. They could not work, but were taken care of until they died, the last in 1886, 21 years after the end of the War all of the now ex-slaves were still at the old place in Mississippi. See what happened to the "free labour" in the North when they were unable to work.
