Wouldn't we be better served by learning to deal with that kind of thing for ourselves as individuals? I do it and hardly even notice spam any more. DON'T BE A DUMB-ASS, READ A BOOK! Ah the old "well just delete it" argument. It's fine on the individual level, where one can either filter or delete spam, but that does not really solve the problem on the network and server levels. Sure, it keeps the spam out of your inbox but the real damage is the bandwidth, server resources and businesses that get harmed due to blacklisting. (i.e. when some scumbag hacks their mail server to pump a bunch of spam through it that appears to originate from their company due to the IP address.) I know, I used to be a spammer in the early 2000s (and I'll tell you that porn was a lot more lucrative than Viagara-- when I hit say three million addreses a day we'd be looking at $500-$1000 in revenue.) I sure wish I'd spent that cash on gold back then, rather than pissing it all away on coke, hookers and an expensive rented condo though. Easy come, easy gone.) |

Quoting: Gazing @ Orion [link to www.nytimes.com] That's an absolutely stunning find. My theory has always been that spam/virus is supported by the companies that pledge to protect us against said threats. You'd think the banks would be fighting it given how many cases of fraud they'd need to deal with. I guess the revenue stream is just that good. "There are known knowns. There are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns. That is to say, we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns, the ones we don't know we don't know." |
