I would buy a survival store or business...that way if the shit hit the fan, you'd have all the stuff you need.
"Alexander was a great warrior and ruler who had conquered nearly one-third of the world. He wanted to become emperor of the entire world, but he was defeated in battle and fell sick with a terminal illness. A few days before his death, Alexander called his ministers and explained to them how he wanted to be buried. He told them he wanted openings made on both sides of his coffin, through which his arms should be kept hanging out with the palms turned up. The ministers asked him why he wanted this to be done. Alexander replied that, in this way, everyone would come to know that the great Alexander, who had strived his whole life to possess and conquer the world, had left it totally empty-handed. He had not even taken his own body with him. Therefore, they would understand how futile it is to spend one's whole life chasing after the world and its objects.

After all, in the end we cannot take anything with us, not even our own body. So, what is the use of feeling overly attached?"

location...location...location...

Better do a lot of pre-market analysis...and talk to other franchise owners that are already in that line...whatever you decide on.....it is not just a buy in and success....

hard work owning a business...and then you need to hire employees....employer handbook...lots of regulations...

Do your homework and Good Luck !!!!

Re: I will have 200k within a year to buy a business. Should I buy a franchise?
I don't have 200k ... but i'm also planning on setting up a small business .

I have worked out that with 18 k i can set up a small business in an emerging market thats expanding thru the roof and could tune over 200 k within the first 2 years .

i have been doing my homework on this industry for about 18 months now and it's a license to print money ....I just need to get my foot in the door .

I would advise you to plan ... make contacts ....Now exactley what your doing long before you do it.

Look at how others do it and see where you could do better ...learn from the mistakes they make .

Try and find a business that you yourself have an interest in ... be it motor bikes or fishing .... your prior knowlage and enjoyment of it will serve you well :)

Most truly absentee owners go broke.

Most owners who survive keep a close eye on the business operations and often work behind the scenes in the business.
Nobody cares if you go broke but you. Nobody cares if you make a good profit or not. All they really care about is how much money and benefits they can make off from you.

So unless you have an MBA or can afford a pack of Accountants and Lawyers,to keep you out of legal trouble.
You need to stay away from going into business.

Consider high rate CD's or Stocks that pay dividends.
It will cause you a lot less headaches.

Marketing for sure is the key to success...you could have the best business in the world .... if you don't know your market ...and they don't know you or your location ...sure to fail .

Creating a per opening hype or interest in your business before you even open it is a sure fire winner .

Re: I will have 200k within a year to buy a business. Should I buy a franchise?
I used to work for a company that sold franchises. That company worked hard to make their franchises successful.

Check to see about resale or buy back of the franchise.

Check how much $$$$ and what kind of advertising support goes to the market your franchise is in.

If you buy a franchise from a good company you don't need to know much they will train you and set up turn key operations and systems for you. And be available to advise you over the rough spots.

The trick is getting a good stable growing market, supported with corporate not your advertising dollars. Make sure the product will sell readily in the market you set up shop in.

You will run your franchise mostly their way. If you find this restrictive then you may want an out.

Back during the recession in the 80's, cash was in very short supply. I remember CD rates going to 25-28 percent because no one had any cash to invest. We are approaching a similar situation now.
Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one and most stink.
Here's mine:
Any franchise business should be avoided like the plague right now.
Put 33 percent in silver.
Put 33 percent in gold.
Invest 33 percent in long term foods like canned soups, cigarettes, liquor, powered milk/freeze dried fruit in large cans. The price of food is going to skyrocket shortly. You will be able to make handsome gains on your food and name your own price on cigs and booze - or - use them to barter for what YOU really need.

I would spend it and enjoy life

it's just a number

can't even say 'money is just a piece of paper' anymore because nowadays it's just a bit in a computer memory

live life, enjoy life, screw working

this ain't gonna last forever in case you haven't noticed - quit saving for a nonexistent future and LIVE A LITTLE
