crater lake is the small lake and taal lake is the large surrounding lake mentioned in the article.. look on google maps.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1405029

i have done. read my replies. i can't see 375 tons of small fish being farmed from a small 1 mile wide lake, can you? perhaps I'm wrong though.

anyway, here's what taal usually does..

''While seismic activity is a common precursor to eruptive activity, another useful indicator at Taal is the temperature of Lake Taal. Before the 1965 eruption began, the lake's temperature rose to several degrees above normal. However, on some eruptions there is no reported increase in the lake's temperature. On some eruptions, the dissolution of acidic volcanic gases into the lake has resulted in the death of large numbers of fish and animals.''

Maybe I misread but the article clearly stated it was taal lake the big lake not crater lake the small one was only trying to clarify. Either way does not sound good more volcano doom

lol, the fish farms are definitely in the bigger lake, my boyfriend and I went to Taal when we were in the Philippines about two years ago.

Nearly 400 metric tons of milkfish were found floating in Taal Lake in the northern Philippines, local officials said today. Talisay Mayor Zenaida Mendoza said that more or less 375 metric tons of milkfish died since Thursday in 84 fish cages in Sampaloc village of the same town in Batangas province.

Zeny Macatangay, Municipal Agriculture Officer of Talisay, said that initial investigation disclosed that the fish death was due to “sudden change of water temperature” in the lake where Taal Volcano is located.

Alert Level 2 is still in effect over Taal Volcano, with the interpretation that magma has been intruding towards the surface, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said. Six volcanic earthquakes were recorded in the past 24 hours near the volcano.

ONE volcanic eruption caused the famine of 1815-1816, when it snowed every month of the year in Virginia. Survivors called that year 'eighteen-hundred-and-froze-to-death'. If you've not been hiding in a cave then perhaps you have seen that there have been MANY volcanic eruptions this past year or two, and their effect on our climate is cumulative.

So, worst case, probably volcanic winter for five or ten years, a dramatic decrease in the amount of food produced globally, and a corresponding decrease in human and animal populations living on the planet. Maybe 90% of us could die from this SEQUENCE of volcanic eruptions.

no, you're wrong.

we have NEVER experienced a huge caldera eruption, apart from Tambora, which as a poster above said caused huge problems in the 19th century. Problems we are ill equipped to deal with nowadays, in our 'just in time' society.

this caldera is MUCH bigger, and it's water is heating up, a CLASSIC sign of an impending eruption.

it's up to you if you want to bury your head in the sand, but the fact is large eruptions are imminent, in the Phillipines and Iceland, and it is linked somehow to this link, from the BBC, about the Potato Earth..

[link to www.bbc.co.uk]

look at where the highest levels of gravity are recorded.

i don't know where we are headed, but I know there's a bumpy road ahead.

''Fishkill hit five towns and a city in Batangas province, with almost 500 metric tons of dead milk fish (bangus) floating on Taal Lake Saturday.

Fishermen remove dead fish from a cage after a massive fish kill at Taal Lake in Talisay, Batangas, south of Manila May 29, 2011. About 500 metric tons (500,000 kilos) of fish, worth more than 50 million pesos were seen floating in the water that affected six towns the past two days, a local mayor said. A local town agriculturist said the cause of the fish kill was a sudden climate change in the area.''

activity at the CRATER lake, the small one, recorded in April..

[link to www.gmanews.tv]

'Volcanic activity continued to intensify at restive Taal Volcano in Batangas with at least 16 volcanic quakes recorded in the last 24 hours, state volcanologists said Friday.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) also noted an increase in water temperature at the Main Crater Lake from 29.8 to 30.1 degrees Celsius.

In its 7 a.m. Friday update, Phivolcs also said gas measurements at Taal's Main Crater Lake still showed a large increase in carbon dioxide emission compared to January and February.

January and February's emission values were 2,250 and 1,875 tons/day, but the levels shot up to 4,670 tons per day in March.

"This large increase in carbon dioxide concentration indicates gas release from the magma at depth," it said.

Phivolcs said Alert Level 2 remains over Taal Volcano with the interpretation that magma has been intruding towards the surface, resulting in increased seismic activity.

It maintained its advice to the public that the Main Crater, Daang Kastila Trail and Mt. Tabaro are strictly off-limits.

"Sudden hazardous steam-driven explosions may occur and high concentrations of toxic gases may accumulate (in those areas)," it said.

"Breathing air with high concentration of gases can be lethal to human, animals and even cause damage to vegetation," it added.

Also, Phivolcs reminded the public the entire Volcano Island is a Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ), and permanent settlement in the island is strictly not recommended.'

who do we believe though?

''The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources has tested the water in the affected portions of Taal, and found that the lake contains a high concentration of nitrite and ammonia – toxic substances found in animal wastes.

“Medyo mataas kaysa doon sa acceptable level sa fish culture," BFAR aquaculturist Nenita Kawit said in a telephone interview.

In its own inspection, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) said it has not found traces of dumping of animal wastes into the lake. The DENR said it is investigating the matter.''

A few different stories to pick from eh.

Weather change led to Batangas fishkill, says BFAR

Del Mundo said she first received the report of a decrease in oxygen level at the lake on Thursday, and the cultured fish began dying by the next day.

“If the dissolved oxygen drops and it rains, the fish cannot breathe and it dies,” she said.

Schools of fish were seen swimming in circles before they floated dead to the surface in huge numbers. The deaths have occurred in the past at summer’s end, but in much smaller numbers, officials said.

Biya, a fish species that only thrives in the lake, and crabs also died. [link to newsinfo.inquirer.net]

Another item just in.

Wildlife experts have been baffled by the sudden death of more than 800 tons of fish which have rotted on farms in a lake near Taal volcano south of Manila

[link to www.dailymail.co.uk]

Then they go on to say we believe it isn't connected to the recent unrest at the volcano, we believe it is a temperature change.
Why so baffled then ?

This volcano is only 31 miles from Manila, a city of over 20 million people. Ash from Taal's 1911 eruption landed on the city.

The caldera is evidence of a massive eruption that happened some 100,000 years ago. Since then, Taal has "only" been a normal, Pinatubo-type volcano.
