I heard this story when I was learning Arabic at DLI. The story I heard made no mention of the 6-day war. It also said the boat was a spy ship, spying on Israel, under a Greek flag (or some other not-American flag), and that the Old Glory mentioned here in the article was raised during the attack, but not before.
