gsbltd User ID: 1410001 United States 06/01/2011 12:04 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I'll begin by telling you all that I carried my first protest sign as a Gay activist back in 1976 - that's right, just about 35 years ago, before many of you reading this were even born. And, with each successive generation, the so-called "Gay Rights" movement has become more and more deeply mired in internal politics to the point where it no longer resembles what those of us started out to accomplish over 3 decades ago. In fact, back then it was called the "Gay Freedom" movement, if that means much to any of you. This was before Gilbert Baker stitched up his first Rainbow Flag, before there was a PFLAG, before there were large organisations dedicted to "Bears" or a "Leather community" [oh, we had fat, hairy guys who liked to wear leather drag - they just hadn't yet realised how much clout they could carry if they all growled together... and pooled their money]... in fact, in a dingy little L.A. bulding, Troy Perry was just holding his first meetings of what would become the MCC. It was even before there was such a thing as A.ID.S., and I remember well the very first cases that people still ignorantly called the "Gay Flu". Times were very different then, but oddly much the same. We'd still get our windshields [or sometimes our teeth] busted out by roving gangs of street punks [BTW: even the word "homophobia" had yet to go mainstream!] - much the same as it continues today. SO: EXACTLY WHAT HAVE WE ACCOMPLISHED IN THE PAST 35 YEARS? Not much, when you come right down to it. The BIGGEST change is that we have become Homogenized in the truest sense of the word. We have opened our arms and embraced anyone who decides they prefer an "alternative lifestyle" - with many of them just too weak to succeed in a "normal" world, so instead they flee into their own semi-private version where they think there is safety in numbers. That's precisely why urban ghettos such as NYC's Christopher Street or SF's Castro district or L.A.'s West Hollywood still flourish today. It seems today that each group has their own organisations with their own flags and their own lobbyists. Even our overall name changed about 20 years ago. Originally, we were simply, the "GAY" community. One word, one goal. Then the Lesbians decided they were tired of taking sloppy seconds and demanded -yes, DEMANDED- that our name be changed to the LESBIAN & GAY movement. And, it stuck. Next, is was BISEXUALS and they had to be added, just to show how "inclusive" our community could be! Then, the Trannies got into the action, and demanded THEIR piece of the turf and our name changed once again to the LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL & TRANSGENDER movement. We have now reached a point where our premier focus has morphed into a multi-headed Hydra - with each head snapping away at the others for a chunk of the carrion that sustains it. I'm just waiting for a new flag that will honor those who only get their rocks off watching old episodes of Leave It To Beaver, or Cagney & Lacy! Oh, we're still a MOVEMENT all right... but we've now become one of a more colonic nature. Let's just say that magically, the entire world will eventually embrace and encourage the concepts of Sodomy, Gay marriage [a sham in itself] or Gay adoptions. What then? When we've finally attained these much-sought goals... THEN what do we demand for ourselves? You can bet there will spring forth some newly-vital societal affront that will cause gay people to once again DEMAND THEIR RIGHTS - and, never mind whether we need them our not... their OURS and we WANT them, by God! That's the ONE thing that will never change... the greed of a person who's already satiated and doesn't even realise it. If I sound pissed-off it's only because I AM. After 35 years I've seen the work that I and my fellow activists accomplished spiral right down a very large drain and I firmly blame the last two generations of Gay youth directly for this. Well, you can have it. I now live a very comfortable life with Gay and straight friends alike who respect me for WHO I AM - and not what a sign I may carry or a T-shirt I wear states that I am. And, that's enough for me. Last Edited by GSB/LTD on 06/01/2011 12:20 PM |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1410351 Germany 06/02/2011 12:32 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | fuckin homos Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1309016I'm a fuckin homo too, or let's say have set me free of the emotional armadeggon created in the last days between man and woman. Both sex are very fictitious and must be wide knocked to get the extrem position as how they are handled, consumed and sold as very opposit, antagonistic sex. This diversion historically has to do with war as a honored buisness. The peverty of war creates the perverty of man who refuses to operate under the sun of love because there is no room for looting and to exploit exploits. Mens duty on the planet earth: We are not here to serve you pleasure. Our goal is not to spread joy. The emotional set of men has perverted to be proud about the winning ability to erredict every protest against that agreement. The shinning argument the prey. The supress of joy, the strength to operate against that prior law of solution has shown up as a breaker. The realm of patriarchy get set up. Between war and the emotional set of men exists a relation that can just give up for the price of giving up the extremity of the sexual behaved position. It is a war position or let's say no war no need to polarize the behavior between man and woman. The freedom of the Greek fighters in the earlier days of humanity seems to contradict. But their wars had to do a lot with fighting. The war todays motto is just killing. The less risc the better. Thats a warriors understanding in our days of the winning situation. Item. The gay community's understanding of acceptance is: if they upstairs do not longer prosecute us we have won. The cozying and allying with the powerful but makes the community vulnerable and the freedom of love turns sour in the eyes of those who try the war against the elite. A lot of war is in the air. All the men smell it. I am a man, give me a chance to show you all mutherfuckers how able I am to spread non joy. If there is a WWIII and all the doom already considered will take place, bybe civilication, I guess the community thereafter will have to start from scratch. |

Dr. House User ID: 1398844 United States 06/02/2011 03:51 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I'll begin by telling you all that I carried my first protest sign as a Gay activist back in 1976 - that's right, just about 35 years ago, before many of you reading this were even born. Quoting: gsbltd1976. this was the time when if you were a homosexual (the clinical term) it was fixable with ten thousand volts of electricity (electroshock therapy). Along with other therapies including Thorazine and other wonderful (although still very experimental in many ways) drugs. I believe that during this time people were still lynched if they were gay. Matthew Shepperd style. Gay rolls in movies had the gay character as 'evil' or bad. While it wasn't directly said 'this character is a homosexual' there was enough clues to where a knowing adult knew that in Psycho the inn keeper was really one of them homosexuals, thus it is clear that homosexuals are killers. Gays couldn't serve in the military, and they did ask and you had to tell. Gays couldn't marry anywhere in the world back then. Today we have it happening in whole nations, and here in the USA you have Connecticut, Deleware, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont, as well as the District of Columbia. So no, its not exactly like you thought it would be. Sorry, I was one of those who rioted, er, I mean, protested during the civil rights movement, we had our dreams of utopia too, it didn't work out quite as planned. But - in either case, there has been vast improvements. Today a gay/lesbian/bi - whatever can serve in the Military openly in the USA. This is the newest 'win' in a lot of minor wins through the decades. There is less chance that a gay kid (or whatever) will commit suicide over being gay, or being hung on a fence after a sound thrashing by a couple of kids who want to teach him the Love of God. As a species we are slow to change. As societies we are slow to change. While in a human life time 30 years seems like a very, very long time for so little change, in the greater scheme of human history the changes, the distance we have all traveled in 30 years has been phenomenal. No, you and I may not live to see a Federal Gay Marriage Act that allows gay marriage throughout the whole USA, but we can expect to see more states join those that already have gay marriage. No we may not live to see the F word and other nasty comments drop from the common use, and a lot of other stuff. But friend, we have lived long enough to see phenomenal changes, changes that just 30 years ago no one thought they would see. TheBlackVegetable User ID: 1411620 Slovenia 06/02/2011 04:39 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | GLBT movement deserves this pride month for many reasons. First of all, they're the people that don't succumb to the pressure of majority to conform. They demand no greater rights for themselves than for any other human being. They strive for the much needed acceptance of differences among us, greater tolerance and openness in the society. Sadly, this work is still not done, but it's a noble path! Congratulations! |

TheBlackVegetable User ID: 1411620 Slovenia 06/02/2011 04:52 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | yay, gay month! Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1411811I still don't support gay marriage, even if I'm gay. I never thought changing the meaning of marriage was wise. Theres better ways, if people could only get their heads otta their arses. You can't reasonably expect from Church (at least catholic) to give you blessings, but I don't see any reason why you couldn't get such a "blessing" from the state. It's even discriminatory, IMO, if you can't formalize your relationship just because of sexual orientation. I don't undestand what the big deal is anyway: why would anybody even care what two consenting adults are doing in their bedroom? It's not a thing that should matter to a state or general public. |

cetra8 User ID: 1295222 United States 06/02/2011 08:16 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | It is a hollow victory. We get a month that is nice and all but the replies on this post show that people are still dehumanizing us. People are still afraid and still bigoted. President Obama has dragged his feet on every LGBT issue. As he has in so many other areas he is showing little to no leadership on an issue that is a vital human rights issue. But yeah Happy LGBT Pride Month. Manage your own affairs that is enough for one life. May your path be free of tyranny. |
