[link to articles.mercola.com] Astaxanthin is the reason salmon have the strength and endurance to swim up rivers and waterfalls for days on end—their diets are high in this pigment, which concentrates in their muscles and makes them one of the "kings of endurance" of the animal kingdom. This pigment is the most commonly occurring red carotenoid in marine and aquatic animals and is what gives salmon and pink flamingos their characteristic pink color. Most people don't realize that baby flamingos are actually white and don't turn pink until they receive astaxanthin, primarily from shrimp and algae. Astaxanthin is leaps and bounds more powerful than beta-carotene, alpha-tocopherol, lycopene and lutein, other members of its chemical family. It exhibits VERY STRONG free radical scavenging activity and protects your cells, organs and body tissues from oxidative damage. Astaxanthin's unique "antioxidative artillery" provides for an impressive array of health benefits, including improving cardiovascular health, stabilizing blood sugar, boosting your immune system, fighting cancer, reducing inflammation, improving eye health—and even improving your athletic abilities. A friend who has seen me do this major pruning task several times couldn't believe that I kept it up without a break till the job was done. It surprised myself, it's usually at least a 2 break project and always end up sore for a couple days... NO SORENESS with Astaxanthin. Been taking 12 mg BioAstin Hawaiian... for a couple years, just one, most mornings. Edit to add, I learned about it on Dirty Jobs, if you can find the episode it's pretty good. Anti oxidants by name prevent oxidation. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 71318565 Vitamin E, tocopherol, one of it's isomers, I forget exactly, is the strongest. Rub vitamin e on a scar over a few months and the scar will go away. Back off man, I'm a scientist. Here's how you can prove it. Take 2 liters of any vegetable oil. Add equal amounts of vit E to 1 liter and astax to another liter. Measure the peroxide value of the oil over time. THis is a rather simple titration. The one to reach 20 first loses. A PV peroxide value of 20 is considered oxidized by edible oil standards. You can speed up the test by adding heat andor air bubbling. as long as both get the same heat and air. If you add copper or iron that will speed up the rate to 20. The Vit E would be weeks, the astax a few days if that. I think I'll start taking my Vitamin E! If I was a professional athlete or a multi-millionaire I would have continued taking it. In my experience it indeed does work - I found my workout recovery was obviously improved. |
