These Green Card laborers are coming in because they have special training that Americans lack. The training is available in technical schools, Universities and colleges all over the United States, but Americans overwhelmingly enroll in courses that are not in high demand. MY daughter completed four years of college and I asked her what job she had prepared for, and she looked at me funny. Her goal was to complete four years of college with an A average and she did and was very proud of herself. I was proud of her, too; but the reality was that she was just another College graduate without any marketable job skills. We sent her through two + years of Nursing school which I knew nothing about. She had to go through a lot of medical training to be an RN, which she is now. She started her first job up in Alaska two years ago and is making $70,000 a year. BRAG, BRAG, BRAG! But just to show you my heart is in the right place, I had another daughter who graduated with an A average just like the first, and she has a four year English Literature degree. She can tell you all about literature. (She thinks my books are not up to the quality of writing of the Great English writers and I agree with her.) She has not been able to land a job for the past three years. College educated, but no job skils other than baby sitting, which she did while going through college. I have a son who was a Music Major. After three years of college, he finally woke up and decided to change to a Math Major. With that, he will be able to find work, at least in the Navy or Air Force. They grab Math Majors up.. 1st Place in Novel Sales for 6 yrs! [link to www.mobipocket.com] |

[link to www.examiner.com] some important points Summers(Obama's former CRA director) makes in the paper: unemployment insurance extends the time a person stays off work. unemployment benefits are expensive for taxpayers According to Summers taxpayers as a group are paying $8.25 per hour in unemployment benefits to the unemployed. Unemployment rates are higher in states with high unionization. The rate is on higher 1.2 percentage points higher than states with low unionization rates. |

It's all a big joke to be honest. Just one way to gain a surplus on money for hrs worked. Here the employer and employee pay into the EI from source deductions such as the pay check. When you employment is finished, you are entitled to apply for them but u might not meet the criteria. Regardless, what you pay into and what u get back are very very different. Last I heard was that there was a billion $$ in EI surplus here in Canada. Gee, I wonder where the surplus is going??? |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1421116[link to money.cnn.com] Unemployment benefits fading away Even though the nation's jobless rate is on the rise, millions of people could see their unemployment checks stop coming at the end of the year. Nearly all Americans who find themselves out of work starting next month will likely receive only 26 weeks of state unemployment checks -- at most. Why? Because the deadline to file for extended federal benefits expires at the end of the year. "Most people who lose their jobs after July 1... won't be eligible for federal unemployment benefits," said George Wentworth, senior staff attorney at the National Employment Law Project. I have been told that this (the unemployment extension) has been the only reason we do NOT have unrest here in the US. I'd hate to see what happens if they do not extend them without supporting some kind of major job initiative (of which they should have done a LONG time ago). Love |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 115818820 weeks isn't enough but 99 is too much. i tried to hire a paralegal for my law firm....i met with two ladies drawing unemployment....both said that my offer was about what they were getting on unemployment benefits so why would the come to work for just a little more money when they could get the same amount and not have to work for 52 weeks. i couldnt believe it...i said, well at the end of your 52 weeks, this job wont be available and you are not guaranteed another job will be either...take it while you can....they both declined. amazing.. now im seeing an article that says companies arent hiring people that have been sitting on unemployment for all that time...they have lost skills and initiative... moral of the story, benefits are temporary and you better look for and take a job as soon as you can. dont just sit there on benefits because you can... |

The reason for setting the benefits at 26 weeks, (1/2 year), was to encourage people to consider their options while making a probable transition to a new, (and probably lower-paying... initially), line of work. A 'do-over', if you will... There ARE jobs out there... maybe NOT what you would choose... but a productive job that pays the bills, and which offers the potential of providing you a return to your former lifestyle... IF you apply yourself. 26 weeks... Six months... Take that time to re-prioritize and downsize... You can get back to your former lifestyle.... If you show interest and desire to advance. Maybe, though, you will recognize that the road to wealth is to start your own company... Use this opportunity to learn a new skillset.. Use THAT to find your niche, and create a business that will offer hope for YOUR employees... Working for someone else IS slavery. |
