FACEBOOK is now using Facial Recognition

Facebook enables facial recognition setting without warning users
It’s time to once again check your Facebook privacy settings as the social network’s new facial recognition feature goes global.

Launched in the US last year, the tool looks at photos as they are uploaded and scans a user’s friend list to see if it recognises anybody in them. If it does, it automatically suggests they are tagged.

Aimed at speeding up the process of people tagging their friends in images, facial recognition has now been switched on for millions of users - who were not told that the option would be automatically enabled on their account.

Some users are unhappy that a website ‘knows’ what they look like, while others have complained about the way the new feature was turned on behind their backs.

The sneaky default setting means it is up to users to turn the option off if they don’t want it, instead of enabling it if they do.

[Blog: Social Media - Share and Share and Like]

The issue at stake isn’t so much about facial recognition technology as it is about Facebook ‘eroding the online privacy of its users by stealth’, writes Senior Technology Consultant Graham Cluley from security firm Sophos.

‘Most Facebook users still don't know how to set their privacy options safely, finding the whole system confusing. It's even harder though to keep control when Facebook changes the settings without your knowledge. The onus should not be on Facebook users having to ‘opt-out’ of the facial recognition feature, but instead on users having to ‘opt-in’.’

How To Disable Facebook's New Facial Recognition Feature
Facebook has rolled out a new feature that relies on facial recognition technology to automatically identify users in photos posted to the site and recommend people that others can tag in these images.

The feature, which was already live in the U.S., is now being launched in "most countries," according to Facebook, and has led privacy advocates to chastise the social network.

Not comfortable with the feature? Here's a step-by-step guide to how users can disable the facial recognition feature.

about facial recognition

Osama Bin Laden’s picture verified by facial recognition
The NewYorkTimes confirmed that Osama’s body identity was done by commandos that used a camera phone to upload a photo to Operation room where engineers used facial recognition software to verify it. Till now Facial recognition technology was widely used in Hollywood movies but recently it has become a widely used technology for recognizing an individual. Earlier it was iris scan, thumb impression and ear biometrics that are unique for each individual. But Facial recognition is now a reality on the web, Picasa’s face-matching technology lets you organize your photos according to the people in them. Name tags are turned on by default, so the first time you open Picasa, it will scan your photos for new faces. [link to www.buzzingup.com]

Face-recognition satellite spotted Bin Laden

read that head line once more

Al-Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden was spotted by facial recognition software while he was exercising in his Pakistan compound in September, it emerged yesterday.

The breakthrough set in chain a sequence of events which led to his death in a 40-minute operation witnessed by US President Barack Obama via satellite.

US officials revealed that bin Laden's Abbottabad compound had been under surveillance for several months.

And it was facial recognition software that identified bin Laden from satellite pictures as he exercised outside in September. [link to www.nzherald.co.nz]

Re: FACEBOOK is now using Facial Recognition with out informing users
You can take off that ninja mask now. A new facial-recognition algorithm created by researchers at the University of California at Berkeley and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is able to recognize faces with 90-95 percent accuracy, even if the eyes, nose and mouth are obscured.

"Most algorithms use what's known as meaningful facial features to recognize people -- things like the eyes, nose and mouth," says Allen Yang, a postdoctoral researcher at UC Berkeley's College of Engineering who developed the new algorithm. "But that's incredibly limiting because you're only looking at pixels from a designated portion of the face and those pixels end up being much smaller than the whole image. Our algorithm shows that you only need to randomly select pixels from anywhere on the face. If you select enough of them, you can produce extremely high accuracy."

Re: FACEBOOK is now using Facial Recognition with out informing users
sounds like a neato tool right?

WRONG

Face-recognition technology, often touted as a promising tool in the fight against terrorism, earned a bad reputation after it failed miserably in some well-publicized tests for picking faces out of crowds. Yet, on simpler challenges, the technology's performance is improving and business has been growing.

Major casinos now use the technology to spot card counters at blackjack tables. Washington is planning to require the technology in the next generation of American passports. Several states are using face-recognition systems to check for individuals who have obtained multiple driver's licenses by lying about their identity. And Pinellas County, Fla., recently began deploying the system in police cars so officers can check the people they stop against a database of photographs without having to go back to the office.

Face-recognition systems, using cameras and computers to map someone's facial features, collect the data for storage in databases or on a microchip on documents like passports. Making the technology work has required nearly perfect lighting and cooperative subjects, conditions that are not present when trying to spot suspected terrorists and criminals in a crowd.

Police build national mugshot database
[link to www.silicon.com]
Police are investigating how to incorporate facial recognition software into a new national mugshot database so they can track down criminals faster.

The Police Information Technology Organisation (Pito) is already working on a Facial Images National Database (Find) project to deliver a national mugshot database for police forces of England, Scotland and Wales.

It aims to create a database of still and video facial images, marks, scars and tattoos, linked to criminals' details on the Police National Computer.

Face recognition emerging as viable tool for verifying ID
By Michelle Speir, Federal Computer Week
Facial-recognition technology has improved significantly during the past few years, making it an effective tool for verifying access to buildings and computers. But it's less useful for identifying unknown individuals in a crowded stadium or airport.

Facial recognition is hard work. Different lighting conditions, varying expressions, aging, weight changes, facial hair, sunglasses and, of course, intentional disguises can present daunting challenges for any facial-recognition system.

In fact, studies show that alert humans do a better job of matching faces than computers do. The key word here, of course, is "alert." Facial-recognition technologies don't get tired and they don't come to work with hangovers. The drawback is that they make more mistakes than people do.

Ten years ago on a cold dark night
a man was slain neath the town hall light
There were few on the scene
but they all agreed
that the slayer who fled looked a lot like me

The judge said son what is your alibi
if you were somewhere else
then you won't have to die
I spoke not a word
though it meant my life
For I had been in the arms of my best friend's wife
"How can the breakaway civilization operate with impunity? There is a vast secrecy about outer space and inner space. Inner space is consciousness. Eight billion people have to have their inner space shut down, through mind control, so that the outer space program can be kept secret.

Divorcing inner and outer space from each other is the core goal of all elites. It always has been. My commitment is to ending the divorce. Then we would be privy to an astounding kind of knowledge. Not just new information, but a new kind of information. We would see with new eyes." - Jon Rappoport

Now see, I don't think FB is all big bad and evil and folks screaming about things like this are just whiny asses to me.

a) no one makes you get on fb

b) if you do, and you are too stupid to figure out privacy settings, that's YOUR problem

c) fb is not evil and there are many good things about social media. but, like with anything else, prudence is required.

people are so funny - on one hand they despise government interference but then want to make statements like "fb should not be allowed to do this" or fb should be forced to make the default opt-out instead of opt-in" (I realize you didn't say that, OP, but there are lots of people that do). fb should be able to do whatever it damn well pleases and you and i can take it or leave it. period. end of discussion.

people are so funny - on one hand they despise government interference but then want to make statements like "fb should not be allowed to do this" or fb should be forced to make the default opt-out instead of opt-in" (I realize you didn't say that, OP, but there are lots of people that do). fb should be able to do whatever it damn well pleases and you and i can take it or leave it. period. end of discussion.

we don't need baby sitting!

It aims to create a database of still and video facial images, marks, scars and tattoos, linked to criminals' details on the Police National Computer.

Another reason not to get tattoos or piercings...

they'll get you one way or another... your drivers license pic is in the gov't database.

Facebook is for self absorbed losers who can't socialize in real life.

Re: FACEBOOK is now using Facial Recognition with out informing users
just stop using facebook. don't try to work aorund every little scheming thing SUCKER-BERG does. You can't. facebook is doing so many illegal things that go far beyond the means of the current technology the public uses.

best thing i ever did was back in 2006 got rid of my fb account. I did it because thats when they made fb public. you use to have to be in university and have a student number to sign up. once they opened the door i knew it was B.S. so i got out and have never looked back.

just something to consider op! but thanks for letting people know about this facial recognition! scary shit...
