Proper use of the word "anymore"?

Proper use of the word "anymore"?
I've read and heard people use the word "anymore" in a sentence that contradicts how I've known this word to be used.

For instance, I have always understood "anymore" to be the opposite of "evermore", or a close relative of "nevermore"; as in it doesn't happen any longer.

But more and more people have been using it exactly the opposite lately. For instance:

Proper --> I can't handle this anymore.
Improper --> The world is a scary place anymore.

How do you use the word "anymore", and why the sudden improper usage?

I think it's midwesterners who abuse "anymore" that way.
I hope it doesn't spread because it's very ugly and annoying.

Much I marvelled this ungainly fowl to hear discourse so plainly,
Though its answer little meaning little relevancy bore;
For we cannot help agreeing that no living human being
Ever yet was blessed with seeing bird above his chamber door
Bird or beast above the sculptured bust above his chamber door,
With such name as "anymore"?

I've noticed the same thing anymore.

It bother's the shit out of me anymore.

People just put anymore at the end of their sentences anymore for no reason at all anymore.

Long form summar: People that barely understand the English language are posting on the internet causing other people who barely have an education or understand English to pick up terrible habits and spread these ridiculous abuses around.

All you can do is just consider that the person probably doesn't speak English as their native language and is just repeating bad form and improper usage when they type online.

The net is a big place full of people who speak English out of necessity and don't care one bit about it's proper usage and only want to get their point across regardless of how bad it pisses of native speakers to read those abominations.

From your link:

Although both anymore and any more are found in written use, in the 20th century anymore is the more common styling. Anymore is regularly used in negative <no one can be natural anymore — May Sarton>, interrogative <do you read much anymore?>, and conditional <if you do that anymore, I'll leave> contexts and in certain positive constructions <the Washingtonian is too sophisticated to believe anymore in solutions — Russell Baker>. In many regions of the United States the use of anymore in sense 2 is quite common in positive constructions, especially in speech <everybody's cool anymore — Bill White> <every time we leave the house anymore, I play a game called “Stump the Housebreaker” — Erma Bombeck>. The positive use appears to have been of Midland origin, but it is now reported to be widespread in all speech areas of the United States except New England.

Hearing people talk this way and reading it, even though I'm in the midwest, makes my brain flip into a paradoxical state of infancy.

Please everyone, help me stop people from using the word this way anymore, by slapping everyone who does it.

ppl often mistake "anymore" for "any more" as well.

But who cares, typos and misuses should be ignored on the internet as long the point is understood.

I'm not talking about typos and misuses on the internet. People all around me are suddenly misusing and abusing the word. It started just a couple years ago.

Anymore = any longer. It should only be used with a negative.

I've heard it used this way, it doesn't bother me, I'm from Michigan, I have a High I.Q., I can appreciate colloquialisms. Unless it's ebonics.

I agree with you. But, since the advent of spell checkers, texting abbreviations and the like, people don't give a shit about speaking English properly anymore. Hell, I live in Memphis and English has been almost entirely discarded and replaced by the more modern speak of Ebonics. Even the white people use this new and advanced language. I can't hardly order a biscuit with some orange juice anymore because nobody can fucking understand what the fuck I am asking for. English is becoming increasingly outdated.

It is between 138 and 147, depending on variables.

Let's count the minutes until someone chimes in with "Yeah? Well, I.Q. scores don't mean SHIT dumass!"

I like that one.

Re: Proper use of the word "anymore"?
i blame east indians, the first one's i heard using it improperly 25 years ago

they think they are speaking the queen's english so there's no correcting them

i mentioned that a good english teacher would be teaching english to english speakers not wogs

you could see where it would be difficult to mount a proper argument after that

I LOVE listening to Indian accented people! Everything is musical and has a cadence, and when they flip the occasional word around in structure, it tickles the brain. Like Yoda-speak.
