johnswahoo User ID: 1358419 United States 06/09/2011 11:51 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | In San Diego the average water temperature is around 66, Los Angeles is around 57. The water is way too cold for any type of storm to maintain its intensity. For a storm to maintain it's form and not break down. Sea surface temps must be at least 82 degrees. I believe that Tropical Storm Ignacio in 1997 was the closest that that area ever came to seeing a hurricane. That season the waters were a tad bit warmer off the coast of Mexico and California, yet this storm which came ashore near the border of the United State and Mexico was a very minimal tropical storm. If I remember max wind at land fall was 40 mph. The storm had bite when it formed however by the time it arrived the cold water snuffed out it's energy. "Offer me money, offer me power... I don't care." |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1209990 United States 06/10/2011 12:50 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | If you are going to throw out the Cali bound claim, maybe you should do your hurricane homework. Hurricanes don't thrive in cold water and the water is freezing in San Diego right now, which actually a bit abnormal. We should be in the mid to upper 60's and we are at least 8-10 degrees off right now, so there's no way in heck a hurricane makes it past the middle of baja. Now if we get some warm water it's a different story, but for now, it's a pipe dream to get a hurricane in Cali. Trust me, we'd enjoy a little something crazy in San Diego. It gets a bit boring having perfect weather every day of year. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1325088Yep. I remember when I lived in San Diego, and then ElCajon. My biggest complaint was boring sunny, perfect weather, everyday. So glad I am back in Indiana where everyday is anybodies guess. |

Humboldt Current User ID: 1422280 United States 06/10/2011 05:19 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The reason the water is so cold in So Cal is because the current that brings us our water is called the Humboldt Current and it brings water from up near Canada down the coast and as it gets further south it warms up from the forties to the fifties, and eventually the high 60's by August and September in So Cal. It is the cold water that gives us our dry air, low rainfall totals, and warm clear and sunny days most of the year. Chile has the same setup with cold water coming up from Antarctica giving them a similar climate to SoCal. |
