They could crack down quite easily with a relatively minor increase in police presence and hard enforcement, but instead they are allowing the problem a room to grow and fester. Here is a response for Chicago's new Police Superintendent, Garry McCarthy. He has only been on the job for three weeks but is addressing the issue. I think he has the right leadership skills, but I don't know if he has the necessary man power. We will wait and see.

Old Mayor Daley (a true south-side Irishman) called in the National Guard to control the streets.

That was the first and last time Chicago ever had a curfew.

My sophomore year in a very liberal college in the 'hood, I lived next to the giant fence they had to erect because many years ago, several rapes occured, and the school decided it had to protect itself from "the community." In our orientation session, the first thing the RA's told us was not to sleep next to a window. I awoke to gunfire almost every night I lived there.

I live near there. I heard sirens all morning long. Must have been the police response. Kedzie was flooded from 87th St. to 99th St. in the morning. Traffic lights and electricity were out in different parts of the SW side also contributing to the opportunity for flash mob activity. With the communication network they have established through texting, it's easy to mobilize and attack. Combine that with an under-funded and under-manned police force, unemployment, welfare, and an entitlement mentality, there is a recipe for disaster.

You can't do things you used to do say 10 years ago, like leaving your car or home unlocked. Home security systems are not quick enough to apprehend home invaders, as they bash in the front door now and are gone in 1 minute. I will not have a gun in my home, but everyone needs to beef up their own security in the way they see appropriate. I've got 2 big dogs with a mean streak and an attitude towards strangers. Don't leave 1st floor windows unlocked. Use air conditioning instead of leaving windows open. Screens are easy to cut open. Use your deadbolts and reinforce door frames with door guards to prevent kicking in. Also use reinforced strike plates with long screws.

Most of all, be aware of your surroundings at all times. It is not advisable to sit idly in your car, or on a park bench texting on an iPad, iPhone, iPod, Blackberry or whatever. Go to the store, keep your purse tight under your arm, do your shopping and get the heck out and home. Don't invite trouble.

A friend of mine does work in the hood and he's not afraid of the adults. He's afraid of the youngsters 12 and under who will think nothing of blowing your head off at the drop of a dime. Be wary of the young kids laughing, joking and cutting up walking down the middle of the street.

Just a heads up. Most of all, don't show signs of fear. Look them in the eye as they pass.

If you are white and live in a neighborhood with Nigs, Move.

If you are in an area where Nigs are are around, Leave.
