Sismicity at Santorini Volcano !!!
Does anyone know if this seismicity at Santorini Volcano is normal?

There are geothermal features, but for a dormant volcano this seems to be a little extraordinary.

Colombo Bank it’s called.
Yeah I read about that, some M4+’s occured in 2009 along with inflation. But what is so appealing to me is the seismicity within Santorini’s caldera, the number of earthquakes are extraordinary and it’s rather persistent. On average 3-4 earthquakes a day, with some days that have over 20 (!!) earthquakes in 24h.

These records go back to about march this year, and since then there is a clear increase in activity. I’m really curious about the cause.

we know what would happen

large ash cloud, tsunamis

it's done it before, it'll do it again. odds are we'll be worm food by then though. maybe we won't be though. maybe it's building up to an eruption, along with what seems to be EVERY large volcano on this rock nowadays.

Re: Sismicity at Santorini Volcano !!!
Firstly, Santorini isn't a dormant volcano, it's active. The large craters on Nea Kameni are constantly emitting volcanic gases including CO2 and SO2 and several hot springs around both Nea Kameni and Palaea Kameni have that distinctive sulphurous smell indicative of H2S. These emissions are all signs that there is magma underneath Santorini.

Volcanoes naturally go through phases of increased seismic activity. The pre-cursors to eruptions however are still not very well understood as once a volcano erupts, it's then too late to go back and measure the seismicity of gas emisions in the previous months.

There has been a slight increase in seismicity under Santorini since the beginning of this year, but concluding that this will lead to an eruption is far from certain. If an event does occur however, it certainly will not be of the large explosive caldera forming style which affected the Minoans. Most likely it will be of a small effusive character, similar to the 1940s or 1950s flows which form much of Nea Kameni today.
