btw i had the same thing when i was in Japan, i was inadvertenly rude sometimes but since i have some education and a basic notion of the world outside of where i live (unlike most americans) i didn't blame it on the locals.
Different places different customs and expectations.

Maybe you find it evident; that saying no directly is rude, looking someone in the eye is rude, not taking your shoes off when you enter someones house is rude, placing money in someones hand when making a payment is rude, not slurping your soup is rude, kissing in public is rude, blowing your nose is rude, eating on the street is rude, and the list goes on. If you can't even grasp euro customs you should steer well clear of Japan.
