btw i had the same thing when i was in Japan, i was inadvertenly rude sometimes but since i have some education and a basic notion of the world outside of where i live (unlike most americans) i didn't blame it on the locals.
Different places different customs and expectations.

If you can't even grasp euro customs you should steer well clear of Japan. That bit about not placing money in someone's hands is interesting. Here it's ruder than hell NOT to place the money directly into their hands. It implies that they're less than you, unworthy of contact.
