I think the British are kind of reserved. You have to let them come to you. If you force yourself on them, they tend to react with disdain and sarcasm.

Maybe they just felt you were too pushy. Americans often push themselves on people and expect too much of people.

Once they open up and decide to come over to you, they can be pretty friendly and fun.
