The canaries are fine as long as you don't stay in the tourist centers. Loud drunken people are found in all tourist places.

You should have visited Madeira as well. It's beautifull and loud annoying people are virtually non existant there.

I went to Mexico once. The americans there were among the loudest and rudest persons I've ever met and thought they owned the place there.
Then again I frequently visited the States and met great Americans, which are not at all the stereotypes you'll find in Mexico and Vegas.

It's all being at the right places where drunken fucks stay away.

Unfortunately for the friendly Americans they've built up a very bad name the last few decades almost anywhere in the world except in their own country.

A lot of people here in Europe see the US as oil robbers. The US and their allies only intervene in countries where resources are found. Other african countries which don't have resources but do have massive genocides are left alone.
That said a lot of European countries including our own join the US to get a piece of the pie. It's detesting to say at least.

To be fair, you went to the canary islands.

Its the kind of place where the single mums with kids whos dads didnt bugger off, go on holiday.

Ive been to many places on holiday, Found lots of rude german and russian people in Egypt.

The english people who are nice, tend to spend a bit more that 700quid on a holiday.

I'm English and I fully agree with the OP's post. As someone else here said, a lot of these Brits abroad are indeed totally fucked up alcoholics that have nothing better to do than to read the sun, watch football and drink themselves to death.

Almost all Americans I have met (there have been a lot) and I have been to the states a couple of times have been fantastic.
When I was over there, I met nothing buy hospitality.

I used to work there in my 20's, in the timeshare industry. Our bosses specifically told us not to target Americans 'because they dont qualify'...

On subsequent returns to Tenerife, on holidays, I would always adopt an American accent when approached by the touts (walking the gauntlet). They would instantly lose that fake smile and move onto some other poor victim.

That said tho - British people in general tend to be very economical in their conversation, almost streamlined. We ont like to take 5 minutes to make a point when we can say it in 20 seconds. A lot of Americans I've met do exactly that, almost as if their voice is the most amazing thing in the world and everyone should be listening to them.

I've read through 4 pages of these comments and not one person, not one, on either side of the debate, has made any attempt to try and understand the other culture. By reading these posts, I see the irony that you all may be from different sides of the Atlantic, yet you are all sitting in the same shallow boat.

To be honest, I've had some pretty poor experiences at the workplace with anyone in the UK. They are nice as pie face to face, but as soon as you turn your back watch out. I was very much hoping that was just the business culture of the ones I've had to deal with, but it seems generally to be true. I've had friends and relatives who feel the same way working with different people from different UK companies.

There IS a cultural difference that must be taken into consideration. A quick Google search for US vs UK Business Culture comparisons gave some very good info and has helped me to avoid situations.

A little knowledge goes a long way, just don't totally let your guard down.

i know quite a few brits..none of which are rude..they are pretty much the same as regular Americans. I suspect the issue comes in when it relates to "rich" people in general..most rich people regardless of where they are from are snobs in every way possible..again..not all but most.

I lived in Netherlands for some time and took Dutch lessons, I'm not loud and I looked into the cultural differences and such before my husband and I moved there. (I am not OP).

I'm quiet, I don't cuss, yet the girls in my class made me feel like I was in the midst of catty jr. high school girls. It was interesting in a way because I'd never encountered that before.

We also went to La Palma in Canary Islands, but back then it was mostly German tourists, not many Brits there.

I found Europeans in general more reserved, but the English struck me as the least friendly.

I ran into a lot of Australians while living in Europe, those people are so funny and friendly!

The Dutch were nice too, although in general it was very obvious most Europeans, and most likely everyone at this point, do hate Americans.

I did like the French, but my family is from there and I speak French though not like I used to.
