Anonymous Coward User ID: 1373078 United States 06/11/2011 09:51 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | What Could Possibly Go Wrong: Deep-Drilling a Supervolcano When Mt. Vesuvius erupted in A.D. 79, the people around it had little warning, and more than 10,000 of them died as a result. Bad as that was, an eruption of neighboring Campi Flegrei could be worse. As a supervolcano, it’s in the same category as Indonesia’s Mt. Tambora, whose eruption in 1815 killed 92,000 people and caused the “year without a summer.” Campi Flegrei’s eight-mile-wide caldera is so low and unassuming that much of metro Naples was built on top, and yet a full eruption would be one of the largest in human history, the kind of geological event capable of plunging the world into a minor ice age. This time, scientists are determined to give the three million residents of greater Naples abundant warning. Read the rest here: [link to www.popsci.com] |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1373078 United States 06/11/2011 10:26 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | How scientists plan to protect Naples from a Campi Flegrei volcanic eruption Naples is a bustling shipping and cultural center and home to several million people, all living in between Vesuvius on the city’s eastern skyline and the much less famous complex of craters, cinder cones, and steaming sulfur pools known as Campi Flegrei on its west side. The volcanic risk is high here. While experts are certainly keeping a close eye on Vesuvius, research since the 1980s has shown that a Campi Flegrei eruption could cause the worse disaster. ♦The Campi Flegrei Caldera Vesuvius, a stratovolcano, has erupted frequently during recorded times, last in 1944. Campi Flegrei, which is known outside of Italy as the Phlegrean Fields, actually used to be considered the lesser of the two threats, since it hasn’t erupted in over 450 years. It was more famous for the way its ground goes slowly up and down, leaving some Roman ruins submerged, and at other times, standing on dry ground. ♦The Campi Flegrei Deep Drilling Project In early February, scientists will start drilling into parts of Campi Flegrei and its environs at locations where they hope to find the most information with the least amount of difficulty or risk. The project will start with two initial bore holes on land, in the grounds of an unused factory near Bagnoli. These will be relatively shallow, less than 2 km, and should provide data on ground structures as well as measure the temperature gradient with depth, which tells geologists just how far down the top of the magma chamber is without actually having to approach it with the drill. Anonymous Coward User ID: 1373078 United States 06/11/2011 10:42 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | It is a challenge trying to find any info on this Volcano. The articles recently posted have to do with a controversial drilling project. Apparently, there was opposition because some thought the drilling would be tempting fate and cause some kind of disturbance that could possibly end in a disaster. Here is another article that came out during the time of the controversy: Waking Hades Fearing a global catastrophe, the mayor of Naples may halt exploration of the massive volcano that lies under her city. But some scientists say inaction could be riskier. "[An eruption of] Campi Flegrei could generate global, worldwide catastrophes," De Natale tells NEWSWEEK. "If it erupted, it would be really a complete catastrophe at a global scale, with millions of casualties, strong climate changes, perhaps causing a small ice age, and sterilization [contamination] of several hundred thousand square kilometers of European land for centuries."
