People need to realize that the system of locks and dams meant to control the rivers also impedes the ability of the rivers to behave naturally. All rivers will flood. There are bottomlands where the water will go and subside naturally...if it is allowed to do so.

The increasing demand for housing led to the building of sub-divisions in places where this would naturally occur. If you are one of the lucky ones that bought property in these places you should take it up with the planners, developers and bankers who allowed them to be built on flood plains in the mis-guided and criminal quest for the almighty dollar.

Mother nature will not be denied.

Re: BYE BYE ST LOUIS...This isnt even funny!!!! This is serious...Missouri river flood updated!
Monday brought two levee breaches and impending interstate closings, and the worst of the Missouri River flooding is yet to come.

A South Dakota dam that has been releasing extra water for weeks will hit a peak today.

That means even more trouble for Hamburg, Iowa, and Big Lake, Mo., two towns near Missouri River levees that completely breached on Monday. Many residents in each town had already evacuated.

Hamburg is protected by an additional levee, but the Army Corps of Engineers was unsure how well or how long it may hold up.

The 300-foot levee breach in Atchison County, Mo., near Hamburg also prompted plans for closing Interstate 29 in the area. Iowa Department of Transportation officials expect water will meet the road on Wednesday. Detours are planned.

The interstate closings may extend into Missouri. It already has been closed near Council Bluffs, Iowa.

A secondary levee in Holt County, near Big Lake, may help to hold off water in that area. Monday’s breach occurred downstream of a recent repair.

The breaches won’t lower the flood stage downstream toward Kansas City, but it probably will delay the peaks, Corps officials said Monday. Originally officials expected the highest water to take about four days from today’s release in South Dakota to reach this area.

Sure, I live in StL about 10 miles from the confluence of the Missouri and the Mississippi. Although the water is very high, I've seen it like this a couple times in the 23 years I've lived here. Although it's supposed to get higher, I have absolutely zero concern about the possibility of flooding. There are many levees they could open upstream of St. Louis if the possibility of severe flooding was real.

This actually reduces the chance of severe flooding in St. Louis. This is water that would have reached St. Louis, if it had not been diverted by breaching the levee. Less water coming to St. Louis = less chance of flooding, plain and simple.

Remember..we arent even at the crest yet!!! that happens thursday and friday!....please stay safe..this really has already surpassed the 1952 record flood. Im not trying to say its DOOM..I just want everyone to be prepared to head for higher ground....

Also remember...although these levees and dams have seen water like this..they have NOT ever had this duration..they are old..this is a situation to surely watch out for..for all in the heartland.

If it really gets bad, you can bet that the government will open many levees above St. Louis (and possibly flood some small towns, and millions of acres of farmland) to divert a large amount of the water in order to avoid catastrophic flooding in St. Louis. But I do appreciate your concern (and I hope that you aren't in fact trying to spread doom...it's hard to tell these days), and I am definitely keeping an eye on the situation.

This isnt our "run of the mill" spring flooding this time. Usually..most of us know..there are roads that become inaccessible during spring rains..most of us here in the heartland know this..we prepare for that kind of flooding.

THis surpasses that..yes..even the '93 flood..this is NOT doom..no..but it is for thousands of people.

It is not "world doom"..but it IS Local doom..this will change your life forever..just as any natural disaster will..

I just want people to prepare..get your personal belongings together that cannot be replaced..photos..documents...get a backpack..put food, water..first aid..and your stuff that is irreplaceable in...put it in your vehicle..make sure you have at least half a tank of gas.

Pets? Can they stay with someone else for awhile..or can you take them..just think of these things NOW..you wont have time when it reaches your door..as Ive said..they are NOT reporting this on any MSM until its at your door.

Hmmm...Monsanto is based in St. Louis. Doesn't the government love Monsanto? Why wouldn't they care about them? I don't see any logic behind the argument behind the idea that the government does not care about St. Louis. I think the lack of media coverage is based off of the lack of any real perceived threat.

Independence Power & Light officials are closely monitoring the rising Missouri River water levels and the possible effect on the Missouri City Power Plant.

IPL Director Leon Daggett and Deputy Director Paul Mahlberg said Friday that they have been following the flooding levels of the river in Sibley as a gauge for conditions near the Missouri City Plant. The plant is about 25 minutes from Independence along Missouri 210.

Because the plant sits right on the river, there is no levee between the plant and the river, Mahlberg said. IPL officials estimate that minor flooding could take place on the property if the river reaches 28 feet.

"On June 6, 2011, the Fort Calhoun pressurized water nuclear reactor 20 miles north of Omaha, Nebraska entered emergency status due to imminent flooding from the Missouri River. A day later, there was an electrical fire requiring plant evacuation. Then, on June 8th, NRC event reports confirmed the fire resulted in the loss of cooling for the reactor's spent fuel pool.

That's a week ago. Is it smoking yet?

Re: BYE BYE ST LOUIS...This isnt even funny!!!! This is serious...Missouri river flood updated!
I'm 20 miles south of STL and live in a town right on the river ( Crystal City) . We normally flood pretty bad, but outside of GLP there isn't much talk of a major flood along the Mississippi. The water has to go somewhere, but I wonder if the thought is the flooding along the Missouri River will cause much of the flood water to become trapped once it spills into the low lying fields. Not all of the water will flow in the swollen river, the fear seems to be flooding towns and then the floodwater not receding for a long time. The Mississippi will flood, but not much being projected of catastrophic like 1993 and 1995. Just a thought, I honestly don't know much about the flooding this time around. Hi to my GLP neighbors in this part of Missouri.
