Just in ! BIG damaginf aftershock in Christchurch New Zealand

I am so sorry ac.. My partner was living in aranui after that quake and I know how hard hit you all were. It was heartbreaking to see when I was there a few weeks after the quake. Now he is living in someone's washhouse/sleepout in Bexley.

I cannot begin to imagine the stress you are living under, and the not knowing. That I suppose is the worst part eh, the not knowing.

What are the reasons holding you there ?

"Monday's movement occurred on another hitherto unknown fault, just south of the one at the northern edge of the Port Hills that ruptured on February 22. GNS calculates that the February quake has raised the hills by 25cm and lowered the eastern suburbs where liquefaction is worst.

It is a disgrace that people are still having to live in those suburbs now that winter has arrived. If the areas that will have to be abandoned are "blindingly obvious" to Gerry Brownlee why hasn't it happened?

Every time someone from the Government tries to explain this, they leave the distinct impression that there is something they know that they cannot say out loud.(I think this statement is very telling and the author of the article makes some very valid points)

Brownlee's inconclusive verbiage usually goes in the direction of insurance implications."

I'm terrified of staying, only reason I'm staying is because I've got a really good job - if i go to Akl or Tauranga or Nelson will I be able to get a decent job?

Lots of people are going to be VERY upset here soon - 'urban retreat' - huge areas, including Southshore, the land east of the estuary has dropped 2m

AREAS TO BE ABANDONED

The government is tipped to announce this week which areas of land in Christchurch can be remediated and which areas will need to be abandoned.

Earthquake Minister Gerry Brownlee has refused to publicly commit to a timetable for releasing that information, after missing an earlier deadline of late May, but it is understood a briefing for non-government parties has been set for Tuesday when Prime Minister John Key is due to return from a visit to Australia.

It is understood the government will seek to remove even lightly damaged houses in some areas where wastewater and other services cannot be maintained, land cannot be built on and most houses must be removed.

Ac, I understand your reluctance to leave, especially considering the job situation in NZ, however: if you can leave please do consider it. I am truely concerned for everyone living in chch.

what is particularly scary for me in that comment is the area I have highlighted. What passes for lightly damaged? superficial cracking in plaster that does not affect the structural integrity? A fence that toppled over? What? What constitutes light damage and who decides this?

It seems to me that this is just an excuse to forcibly remove people from otherwise sound homes, so they can clear entire suburbs.

If the Waitangi day prophecy/prediction come to pass before the end of June, then it will make the previous quakes and aftershocks look like nothing. Stay safe.

yeah you could hear the fear in his voice, and it took some balls for him to speak up about it like that in that environment as well.

38 years he has had this vision .3 and 8 ,11 and he told us about his vision in the year 2011.

yeah that is a long time to have to hold that inside of him.

I also was told in around 85 that "catastrophic changes were about to hurl themselves upon humanity" That there would be a major quake that would cause wellington to disassociate from the island itself. I believe it will happen, it is only a matter of when, not if.

if the insurance companies would hurry and pay the people out then the people could move .some people have been waiting since sep .when the call the insurance com up they say the will call back and they never do.

NZs second largest city has a chance to completely relocate to a safer ground, we dont need municipal utility`s like electricity, or sewerage, here is a great chance to build a green city free of these outdated, costly items that are no longer necessary as each home could generate its own power requirements, and with composting toilets no need for drainpipes that are prone to breaking after quakes.

Nah, "New Christchurch" on "New^2 Zealand" will be a modern city once the change is complete.

Composting toilets are a brilliant idea. You can get ones that actually burn the sewerage to a sterile dust that can be used as fertiliser on gardens.

A thought, if you let the Quake Map simulator run out from September 4th to the present time (sticky dots option selected), the result appears like a river feeding from the Waimak. in the north and the Rakaia in the south, running through Christchurch and opening to the sea at the estuary.

Compost toilets stop people from putting copius amount of chemical down them all the time to "clean" them.

That makes them ten time cleaner then modern toilets, clean doesnt stop with us, clean stops back in this enviroment we live in.
