congratulations, you probably witnessed some noctilucent clouds. They appear before dawn and after dusk as blue clouds high in the sky

It has to do with electromagnetics. Things are way fucked up right now.

Isn't there a huge military base near you OP?

EERIE BLUISH GLOW....... it's confusing my body clock as well as the birds! I wake up thinking it's daylight!

Re: Can anyone answer this? why is the sky blue at 3:30 am???? Upstate NY
I live in upstate New York - on the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains - strange things are happening in the skies here. First - a month or so back I started hearing birds chirping in the pre-dawn hours. Last night I awoke at 3:30 am and the sky was an electric-looking blue........ the sun does not set until almost 9:30 pm and now its up at 3:30 am - What is going on?

has anyone else noticed this strange new phenonemon? if there's a site that someone can link me to I'd appreciate the info.......
 Quoting: djmason34

I JUST WANT TO KNOW... WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON????
My attempts to find answers on the Internet end with no information....... all the people I try to talk to about it act like I'm crazy, I post in on Facebook with NO responses! Obviously birds DO NOT normally sing at night, the Moon does not disappear for 2 weeks then strangly reappear where it should not be, the night time sky should not be blue - OMG I feel like I'm living in an alternative universe ALONE!

I set my position in Starry Night to Syracuse. Set the time to 03:30 EDT and told it to show daylight. The Sun is 15.5° below the horizon, bearing 034.5°T and the sky is dark blue. If I click the little button that says Hide Daylight, the sky turns black. Sunrise was at 05:26 bearing 056°T.

I suspect it has been this way on June 13 FOREVER.

that is a great idea
I will do this......... hopefully it will explain why the sun sets behind the hill, the sky turns dark blue, to a darker blue then to a muted eerie blue but never turns black now - like the night time sky that is normal -

is it possible that the earth has shifted due to the 3/11 earthquake? and now northern NYS is becoming like Alaska where it remains light this time of year 24 hrs/day?

I have also heard the birds going nuts at like 2 or 3 in the morning a couple of times also. Both things struck me as odd, never having noticed either in my whole life.

Same here, I live down state and for the last 2 weeks there's birds that start chirping at 1:00am or so, LOUDLY and continuously. If you're listening they never repeat a chirp. Never noticed that in the 27 years I've lived here.

We've had couple of earthquakes in the last ten years that have shifted the earth on its axis. I know Japan did, I think the Phuket region earthquake did as well. There may have been one in Chile that did too.

That may explain the changing weather patterns and other anomalies that are the new normal for us.

I live on the East coast too and did some research into this when I was a kid. It is caused by light reflecting off of the surface of the water on the eastern side of the Atlantic reflecting off and into the atmosphere causing a diffuse lighting effect. Very cool you've made note though!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 787140

Wow, that light reflecting off the Atlantic made it all the way to Idaho. Amazing...

I with you. I'm just outside of Syracuse, and over the last month or two without fail, those birds start chirping around 3:05am....as if it was 7am. REALLY loud.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1382487

This time of year dawn starts around 4:30am, the birds start an hour or so before. I cannot honestly believe you have just noticed. This as to be a joke.
 Quoting: Blue Skies

I'm with you blue skies, I'm always amazed at posts that indicate the poster has never observed the natural world in their life, to the point of never leaving the house or ever looking up once they are outside. (not saying that about the OP)

The "dawn bird chorus" has always been referred to in literature both scientific and poetic.

I have thought that they probably sing more at night in our time though because that's the only time they aren't drowned out by traffic noise and they can hear each other over long distances between their territories.

People do know that the birds sing most when they are in the breeding season, right? These few months of spring when they establish territories, find a mate, build a nest and raise young. After that most species flock together and move about in groups to find food and resting places.

Am I really explaining that to people? Slap me for being condescending . . .

OP, there's an old medieval concept called "welkinblight"...it's EXACTLY what's been going on for several years now--strange storms, comets "signs in the sky", disease on earth, animal spontaneous abortions, crop failures, floods, wars and turmoil in the affairs of men.

Things get whacked out in the sky, and on earth.

There's NOTHING on the internet about welkinblight, I've tried finding references for several years with no luck. I read about it in a small old book at Baker Library, Dartmouth College back in the late 1970's. There was perhaps no more than a page about welkinblight, a mere mention of the concept and the phenomena attending it. That's how I came to know of it.

When Hale-Bopp passed by us, welkinblight began again, as I see it.

If there's any scholars on glp, maybe you can do better than I with finding more info about it.

Re: Can anyone answer this? why is the sky blue at 3:30 am???? Upstate NY
This is from Wikipedia....

Noctilucent clouds are tenuous cloud-like phenomena that are the "ragged-edge" of a much brighter and pervasive polar cloud layer called polar mesospheric clouds in the upper atmosphere, visible in a deep twilight. They are made of crystals of water ice. The name means roughly night shining in Latin. They are most commonly observed in the summer months at latitudes between 50° and 70° north and south of the equator.

again...the "ragged-edge" of a much brighter and pervasive polar cloud layer

I believe the ragged edge may not necessarily be seen depending on the circumstances.

There is also this: Noctilucent clouds can form only under very restrictive conditions; their occurrence can be used as a sensitive guide to changes in the upper atmosphere. Since their relatively recent classification, the occurrence of noctilucent clouds appears to be increasing in frequency, brightness and extent. It is theorized that this increase is connected to climate change.

[link to en.wikipedia.org]

There is also information about volcano activity causing this. Again, I believe that the ragged edge cloudlike formations are not necessarily going to show up as the article states. However, the clear deep blue color from the reflection of the low or high sun in the right circumstances is very evident.

I learned about this in response to the same question pertaining to the OP, that I posted in a thread a few months ago.

I don't have an explanation but can agree i have seen the same. About a month ago in Nashville in the middle of the night I noticed the sky being a very rich deep blue. It was beautiful but also very strange. I have noticed it a few times since then. I have also heard the birds going nuts at like 2 or 3 in the morning a couple of times also. Both things struck me as odd, never having noticed either in my whole life.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1418279

I'm just outside of Nashville and noticed the same thing. I want to say it had something to do with the "supermoon" that we had mid-March. The birds aren't too unusual as they will chirp all night when they have a nest of babies or a nest about to hatch.

I live west of Saratoga County on top of a mountain. We have also had really intense lightening storms as of late. This winter we had fireball lightening and thunder-snow and now when it thunders it just seems to go on forever....... like long rumbling freight trains. A few weeks back there was a thunder noise that sounded like an actual explosion. The next day I checked with neighbors and everyone thought it hit just outside their door...... crazy!
 Quoting: djmason34

This caught my attention!

We have been experiencing long rumbling thunder. I never heard thunder like that before and I have traveled and camped in many places. Like prolonged thunder.

Welkin ... The Welkin are a form of woodland elves that had evolved over many periods of time. The Welkin share many things in common with normal elves, specifically physical features. However, these adapted elves have many inhabitants that have wings. These wings enable them to fly and fight from above. The Welkin left the forest because of the difficulty to fly in search of better suited terrain. They populate mostly mountainous areas, along with hills. Dwarves are usually competing for land with the Welkin, which leads to distrust and wars. The Welkin sometimes ally trolls if needed during wars, since they have a common enemy.

Blight ... The last of the three great signs of the Apocalypse was the blight. Corpses risen from death to eat the flesh of others and spread a disease caused strange creatures that seemed to control them like puppets. While little was originally known about these creatures a group of oracle scholars pent up in a heavily fortified University with help of magus stasis fields were able to capture and study these unholy beasts to find that they are controlled by small microbes and a later evolution of which is a large flesh burrowing parasite. As a whole they are necrophagial but spread easily and take over the corpses of any dead, it is believed because of these facts that they are the worst of the three plagues upon humanity, and the most likely to be unstoppable.
