Anonymous Coward User ID: 1251961 United States 06/14/2011 12:57 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | This is a FUBAR situation. The South is on fire and in drought, while the North is under water. All of this Water is going to all go to the Gulf. And fucking up many States on the way. Not much food is going to be grown this year. Hardly any. And then on top of that, if one could plant, nothing is growing due to the changes in everything. And how is one to grow in their house, when the grid is unstable, and might crash. People do not realize that the causes taking place right now are going to equate to very deadly effects later on this summer. And then pile all the other shit on top of that, and we have a full fledged FUBAR. |

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on Tuesday morning will begin releasing 150,000 cubic feet of water per second from the dam that controls water levels along the Missouri River in Nebraska, Iowa and points south. At 150,000 cfs, a football field would fill four feet deep in one second. Normally, water flowing out of Gavins Point takes about two days to reach Omaha. |

Also, both Alberta and Montana are expected to get a huge amount for precipitation for a solid week. [link to m.bismarcktribune.com] |

There will be MEGA WATER headed down towards the Fort Peck Dam. MEGA. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1408667 United States 06/14/2011 02:45 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Releases from Fort Peck are now up to 65,400 cf/s which greatly exceeds the fastest release in the past per the reports I read (down around 30,000 cf/s). Inflows over the last 24 hours have been 86,000 cf/s, which is about the same as the day before (which is why the reservoir continues to climb, albeit slowly) All dams are constructed with a "reserve" capacity that is greater than the flood control height ... but I have not seen anything on the web as to what that "reserve" capacity is for Fort Peck. My best guess is that it would somewhere in the 5 foot to 10 foot range, probably around 8 feet since that is 1/2 more than the difference between the full capacity and the flood capacity level of the reservoir. Obviously the dam engineers would like to bring the level down to the normal flood control level, but to do that will require inflows to abate somewhat, which they may if further rain does not occure in the watershed (the problem for that dam has been excessive rain in the watershed ... 1 year's worth in a month about 12 inches). Liquifaction, which is the danger that the one person claimed as a problem for this dam, would imo take some time to develop even with an overfull reservoir since it would take a while for water to force it's way into the interior of the dam, if it can, and weaken it. As I stated a couple of days ago I believe that would take 2 to 3 weeks of a totally flood full/overfull condition before any problems would start to show up ... and then they would ONLY show up if there was an underlying structural defect in the dam (if there is no underlying defect in the dam then they won't show up at all). Time to watch the weather forcast for that area!! They need a few days of more outflow than inflow to get the Fort Peck dam down to it's normal "flood full" level of 2250. |
