U.N. victory may push Syria’s Assad into unwinnable war

Syria’s victory in dodging a U.N. resolution it deemed a license for regime change may only escalate its internal conflict into a full-fledged civil war that many analysts believe President Bashar al-Assad cannot ultimately win.

With the collapse of the sole diplomatic effort recognized by Assad’s foes - both armed and in a split civilian opposition, the stage is set for deeper diplomatic isolation of Syria and perhaps a new flows of arms and money to Syria’s insurgents.

“The worst effect of the veto is that it inflames, the civil war, intensifies it. We’re no longer talking about a hypothetical civil war. We’re now in the middle of a civil war. It’s started,” said Nabil Boumonsef, a columnist with Lebanon’s an-Nahar daily. [link to english.alarabiya.net]

I love the way that the MSM is skirting around two big issues in the Syrian crisis.

1. Russia has substantial naval and air forces in Syria and the region. This is why military action won't be taken by the west (for now at least).

2. Russia and China will support Syria not because they love them, but rather because they have embryonic revolutions starting at home and don't want them encouraged.



There is always talk of 'World War 3' on forums like this, but this time all the ingredients are well and truly here.

- Massive world economic depression
- Russia backed into a corner
- Israel reaching breaking point with Iran
- Lots of regional hot conflict zones (Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia, Sudan etc) mixed with lots of zones just waiting to spark of again (the Caucuses, the Balkans etc), and they are all just asking to join up into one big conflagration.

Rockets Slam into Buildings and Houses in Baba Amr in Homs City on Monday, February 6, 2012 as the depraved Baathist Dictator Bashar Assad orders his Alawite led Army to Destroy as much of the City as they can in order to pave the way for an Army Invasion later this week,( Thursday by some army accounts. ) Hundreds of people have been killed here in the last few days in this city and hundreds, perhaps thousands, more have been wounded and maimed.
Most of the Sunni Generals and high ranking Sunni Military Officer have already been "liquidated" by the Alawite Regime as a "Preventative Measure" as the Regime fears they will defect and join the Free Syria Army. These reports are from fleeing Sunni military officers. (I am not being sectarian - I am just telling you the facts on the ground) Assad can only rely on one-third of the Army to fight for him so his fighting forces are weaker than they appear on paper. Groups of up to 50 soldiers and more defect on an almost daily basis, with many of the Defectors switching sides and joining the resistance movement freedom fighters of the Free Syria Army.

Bashar Assad is an Alawite Sect Minority Ruler and he doesn't see the majority of the Syrian people as "his people" -- as most of us are of a different religion, Sunni Islam. Many Alawites consider Sunni Muslims to be feared and therefore to be ruthlessly controlled and they easily dehumanize us in their minds and will kill us all in order to maintain Alawite Supremacy in our nation. - In addition, Assad hails from a Baathist neo-fascist political party which has a totalitarian ideological basis and is more akin to a Stalinist - Leninist party or to a Fascist or Nazi political party and they therefore no problem ideologically justifying killing off half of the nation, or more, in order to maintain their position of power in Syria, The Baathists are cousins of Stalin and Mao and Mussolini and Hitler , men who killed tens of millions of people, and some Baath Party members have been quoted as saying that they will slaughter 100,000 and more if that is what it takes to stay in power. The outside world needs to either invade Syria now to stop the bloodshed or else NATO and the Americans and friendly Arab nations need to immediately arm our Free Syria Army who are defending our cities from the Assad forces.

Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah on Tuesday stated that in the event of an Israeli strike on Iran's nuclear facilities, Hezbollah would decide itself how to react, rather than taking orders from Tehran.

"Some are wondering what would happen if Israel bombed Iran’s nuclear facilities, and although I rule out this possibility I assure you that the Iranian leadership will not ask Hezbollah to do anything. On that day, we have to sit down and think before we decide what to do," Lebanese website Naharnet quoted Nasrallah as saying.

In a speech delivered via video link at a ceremony marking the birth of Islamic prophet Muhammed, Nasrallah thanked the Iranian regime for its support, saying that Tehran could escape western sanctions if it wanted to, but instead chooses not to "sell out Palestine."

CNN: US preparing military contingencies for Syria


The United States has begun an internal review of its military capabilities vis-a-vis Syria despite remaining committed to diplomatic and economic pressure on Damascus, CNN's "Security Clearance" blog reported on Tuesday.

The report did not specify whether the White House had ordered the review or if it was initiated in the Pentagon. One senior US official told CNN that the US military "would not be doing its job if it did not put some ideas on the table," adding that "absolutely no decisions have been made on military support for Syria.


Senior officials reiterated to CNN that the US's position remains focused on diplomatic and sanctions-based actions but said the preliminary military planning was being done for the eventuality that US President Barack Obama asked for a military option.
