Like BRIEF said, there are endless ways to invest outside of hiding money in a mattress at home. I am managing to save several thousand a year by going without things like home phone and cable television and living in a place I can actually afford.

Again, I agree with the idea that people shouldn't suddenly feel entitled when they retire if they haven't been actively supporting the social safety net, not just grudgingly paying into it. But neither do I agree with Ayn Randian morons who believe in people "pulling themselves up by their own boostraps". I wonder if they've even thought for one minute that is is physically impossible to "pull yourself up by your own bootstraps"?
