Old people are always looking for a free hand out. From Medicare to Social Security and every other free ticket social service out there, the elderly are a bunch of free loaders. Why should my taxes pay for their free health care and pill popping habits when all they do is lounge around watching Wheel Of Fortune and hang out all day on their porches? Old people need to get a job like everyone else and stop expecting everyone else to pay their bills!

The 'old' people who are retired did the same thing, going all the way back to when they got their first job.
The way the system works is that the young folk pay into the system and that money is used immediately for the folk who are 'retired'.
this system works rather well if we have constant growth or even a steady birth to death ratio. but we didn't, we had the baby boom and then a baby implosion (reduction) and that reduction continued not through one, but two and now into three generations (I don't know, kids just stopped liking sex and making babies I guess).
Now congress could have fixed this way back in the 1980's by taking a chunk of social security and depositing in a low interest bearing savings account. But No, congress decided to continue spending money to fight the Commie Threat and various other things (jets and caviar are expensive).
This social security 'problem' is just bad husbandry by the congress and government. Had Reagan's congress actually done the right things social security and Medicare would be self sustaining.
Further, if anyone had been clearly thinking, the way banking is done and how it makes money from money it has sitting in low interest rate bearing accounts (via debt) this whole economic crises and Budget Cliff this congress faces wouldn't exist.
But the elite have to keep sticking it to the poor and middle class, so you gets what you gets.
