In regards to your mind boggling decision and the post above may I highly recommend exploring a foundation to avoid high taxes, GST etc. One Freedom Fighter gentleman in Oz for years has been assisting multiple occupancy, farmers and families with foundations that are being set up in NZ and OZ with a process from one major bank as non profit organisations. I can assist more with information so "gift taxes and such" that can be legally minimized so the majority/ALL the funds goes to a good purpose. The first thing I would wonder is how you intend to contact a chosen individual or people? Then again, I would assume that if you truly have that kind of money to freely part with you probably also have the faculties and money to track down any individual or persons which you chose.

Next, since I am a dreamer and a doer, and no one would even bother posting to this thread without some sort of hope-unless they were just posting to be funny-I shall provide you with my answer.


I would very carefully choose what I were to do with the sudden wealth, as it would be very unlikely that I would ever have such a windfall of love again, so all that I state here would actually be a rough plan and my economic decisions might be subject to change dependent upon current laws, events, and whatever economic advice (thoroughly double-checked by myself) that I was given.

I would achieve long-term financial stability for myself and my family with just 1 million. I've never owned a home and I've never owned a car that was less than 15 years old. I've been a factory worker all of my life and I didn't used to think money was all that important, otherwise I'd be doing much better now because I would have made better finanical decisions. In the past six years or so I awoke to the reality of good financial skills and I am much more prudent with whatever money I do acquire, so 1 million would not only get myself and my family all that we required for much of the rest of our lives (with the exception of income), but it would also do a bit more than that.

I'd spend no more than $200,000 on a home and land, in the country, and less if I could swing it, because if you are patient some pretty good deals will always arise. With another $50,000 I would get myself and my parents a new or near new vehicle (mine is currently the only one and it is not inspected, the brakes are out, etc., though I do thank God for providing us with the $10 we needed to fix it) which can be done if you are very careful with your money. I would probably spend another $5,000 or so to convert my parents' vehicle for my mother who is physically disabled. I would then spend another $3,000 on a used car to use as the primary mode of transportation...this would allow me a back-up vehicle (actually, I'd have two backups with their car counted) since it is very difficult to take my mother to her appointments when the car is broke down. Then, I would spend no more than $50,000 total on furniture, appliances and other household goods, as well as outdoor lawn/garden care supplies for the home.

I might state here that my parents live with me. My mother, as I said, is physically handicapped and has Parkinson's disease, and my father has an aortic anuerysm that makes extreme physical activity quite dangerous. I take care of them...I don't care what anyone thinks of a thirty-something having their parents in the same home. I love my parents, they don't! My parents took care of me, so what sort of person would I be if I did not return that love?

So anyway, I would be purchasing a home and land for not just myself and my autistic daughter (I am single, of course), but also my parents. In total I would get pretty much all the necessities of shelter and transportation for around $308,000. I am able to fully fix my own vehicles (you have to be able to when you have never owned a vehicle less than 15 years old), so I might spend another $5000-$12000 on tools and equipment (a lift and air tools, for instance) that would come in really handy for a backyard mechanic to become a garage mechanic in his own garage and do alot more on his own. Essentially, once I had these newer cars, I'd probably never have a major transportation crisis again. I'd have two backup vehicles, the tools I needed, and once I am done listing my plan, the money to purchase any parts I might need in the future. So, with the repair equipment let's bump that up to $320,000.

Next, I'd buy everyone an enormous wardrobe of used clothing (I don't believe in supporting slave labor, and most clothing is not fully made in America anymore anyway), since I only have 2 pairs of jeans and one button denim shirt that has no holes in it and my parents are about in the same boat. I put every spare penny towards my daughter, so she is pretty good on clothes, but since she is a teenager she still grows out of her clothing quickly. So, put another $20,000 away and we got clothing for life when shopping at the thrift store. Total is now $340,000 and we have clothing, shelter, and transportation for a very long time.

I'd spend around another $50,000 to convert the new home to solar and wind power, so I wouldn't have to worry about electricity (just repairs, which I could do most of myself, being a jack-of-all-trades). I would also install a woodstove for heat, which would be another $1000. The total is now $391,000 and I have clothing, shelter, transportation, power, and warmth (my land would provide the wood for my stove, besides, wood is cheap in the country). Take another $109,000 for a grave error in my calculations, or a forgotten item that would have to go with those things listed by necessity, to put the total upto $500,000.

I'd put away 1 million in the best, most tax protected way, for living expenses (groceries, repairs, etc.). I figure I could live quite well on $50,000 a year for 40 years. Another $500,000 would be invested very conservatively, so the total would jump up to $2 million. I would then put all of my effort into writing, since it is my passion, and I write now as a freelance.

I would then take $100,000 and purchase a home to use as a rental unit. I would use this rental unit to pay my taxes and insurance (as I said, earlier, I've never had that much money, so this idea may not provide enough money, so I would seek advice on how to go about setting myself up with an income that would pay all my taxes and insurance needs). We'll bump the figure up to $500,000 just in case and place the total at $2,500,000. I would then have to take at least $200,000 to repay charities who have helped me through the years (I couldn't have possibly taken more than that from them in all of my life, at least I hope not, I would feel like a real failure if that were the case as that would be more than 4 years income at $50,000).

Then I would take $300,000 and contract a private tutor for my autistic daughter for however many years I could get a good one contracted for with that kind of money. I would pull her out of public school (since they teach her nothing anyway) and have a full-time one-on-one tutor for her who would specialize in working with autistic children and hopefully, who would also be skilled in music. Music is my daughter's passion and I am certain she could excel in it if someone knowledgable in it, who had the time to get to know my daughter and her unique needs and way of learning, could work with her on a continuous basis. I think this would make her quite happy, and it would make me feel like I was able to do more for her than just love her and provide her with the basics. I would be able to provide her with the means to head in her own direction with her strongest characteristic armed in the best way possible. My total would now go up to $3 million.

I'd probably end up spending quite a bit on medical expenses since with that kind of money I don't believe anyone would be eligible for any sort of free medical insurance, so a whole million would probably end up getting washed away there, between my daughter and my parents (mostly my parents) before all was said and done, but I would have to see what sort of insurance I could get. I don't know, because I've never had insurance - I can't afford it. I need new glasses though, and so does everyone else. It would also be nice if I could see a dentist. So, now we have hit $4 million.

The final million I would have to think about. Maybe I'd consider opening a small business in town to help support the local economy, provide jobs, and aid in paying for taxes and stuff? Actually, I'd probably try to get into something which produces food so I could get much of my food from there and further cut my own expenses significantly.

I've always wanted a bunker, so I might waste $20,000 buying an old bus and burying it in the ground or something stupid like that, but I doubt it. Once I realized the cost I'd probably change my mind and decide to take my chances without the bunker. Besides, why should I purchase something like that to "possibly" protect myself later when I could spend that money helping someone who needs help now?

Lastly, I think once I had everything all taken care of I would probably roam around seeking sponsors for a long-distance hike to raise awareness and money for autistic children. I'd always wanted to do a long-distance hike and write a book about it, so I'd probably kill two birds with one stone and do that, but I'd have to pay someone to look after my parents while away - I'd make my daughter go with (it would do her good).

So there you go! This is my rough idea.

This is my second post here, and after careful consideration..... I would sugest that to make a large donation to the Christchurh Earthquake relief fund, would be a great idea, as I believe you are a New Zealander!

Surely something like that would not incure taxes etc.

Maybe a trust fund to help those effected by the earth changes that are taking place at this time!

I think I would set up an ongoing fund for people in need, There are so many worthwhile charities out there..... Doctors without borders, is one I would love to support, as they assist many people who don't have access to quality medical services!

I'd take the money and buy a luxury log cabin house at the end of the transit line of some city next to a mountain with old growth trees and lots of hiking trails (British Columbia or elsewhere?).

I'd also like a separate building so I can house homeless people in need of shelter and I'd help them in any way I can. I'd also have an area where I can take in wounded animals and have the homeless people take care of the animals. So obviously I'd need alot of land.

I'd also use the money to go out to eat alot and eat lots of European cheeses/sausages and foods I enjoy. I'd buy lots of REI clothing etc. and a couple Apple labtops..

I'd trade the rest in the stock market..."it takes money to make money"...

5 mirrion dorras is a ridiculous amount of money, and if you are wanting to do the most good, and are serious, spreading the money around to many people would do way more good than giving it all to one person. 25 people getting 200k or 50 people getting 100k would still be life changing money for everyone.

Why dont you invest the money locally in New Zealand I am sure there are countless NGO's that could use the money. I have a 'list', but primarily I would help a huge amount of folk, some I know personally, some I don't, that need a whole lot of help with Housing, Transportation, Clothing, Food and Medical Care.

I don't believe the OP's story, but still to answer the question, after helping out close friends and family, probably also look for more ways to distribute it here in Korea, starting first with the all the orphans here. Lots of homeless here too, but not sure about that. Have a feeling they would just imbibe more soju, the cheap elixir of the Korean gods here...

To pay off debts and pay for 'things' is only a temporary resolve to the 'machine of existence' most are trapped in. If we lived another way so many would not find themselves trapped in this way and needing so much for family care, healthcare and debts.

I am early 30's and have always had optimism and determination to never give up. I've faced death and sorrows, joys and highs of life, like most folk have yet i know the most challenging times are the ones that really evolve us, shape us and help us grow.

I'm debtfree in a world drowning in debt....i don't know how i resisted but i chose a different way of life - not based on material need yet rather human need- and stuck to it through thick and thin. My wish is to share this with everyone - absolutely every walk of life...as those who have glimpsed my 'dream' thusfar have been in wonder and awe of just seeing how it CAN be possible.

With 5 million....wow...i could expand on my vision, achieve it much quicker...embrace the ideal (which is far more than what i've said here) and most of all actually create a movement that enables people to truly free themselves. Most people just need showing how.
Nature shows us the way and i am a wee gatekeeper to direct people to that abundent, healthy for all and inexpensive way of life! :-)

People need to take an ACTIVE ROLE in their recovery from the sickness of METAL POVERTY... MENTAL LAZINESS...YES .. POVERTY is a mental sickness and the MIND NEEDS TO CHANGE.

Without that, all the other things you do is just a BAND AID to temporary COVER UP and HIDE a WOUND of LIFE experieces that lay just beneith the surface of the band aid.

I have helped Homeless men and women... I have helped people that are already in Govt Sponsored programs.. with an ATTITUDE that you owe me.

Helping others REQUIRES much planning and thought.

There is a REASON and a MENTAL CONDTION for people who are in POVERTY... and the GAME of ASCENSION is to OVER COME... all the REASONS you say NO I CAN't and turn your life in to YES I CAN...

Without that as a starting point.. you are simply putting a BAND AID on any problem that you THROW money at.

Throwing money at a problem is NOT a solution... it is in fact INSANITY... to continue to put money into programs that DONOT HELP OTHER .... HELP SELF.
