Its a Mark 1 BWR just like Fuck-a-shima.

If TMI had been a Mark 1 it would have been all over.
TMI did have a hydrogen explosion but the containment
building held. Luckily with intact systems they where
able to cool it before the core fully melted.

Since they won't have a tsunami on the Missouri, the cooling system will be intact. Presumably if they lose regular electric power they are equipped with adequate diesel generators. (If they aren't even ready with that, they are morons, so I'll assume they are ready.)

So cooling can continue of the spent fuel pools at Ft. Calhoun, although if the river water floods the fuel pool, perhaps some radioactivity may make contact with water flowing downstream -- or maybe not. Also the minerals in the water could possibly corrode the zircalloy coating on the fuel rods. One thing we don't have to worry about for a long time is that the rods will be dry exposed to air, although that becomes a big concern when the flood recedes!

I am concerned about the effect of river water on electronics operating the plant, especially for operating reactors. If those get flooded out, it could be a big mess and things go out of control.

Are you mental? the river is slated to rise another 5 feet. Not only that, the rain isn't finished pouring down yet, also, there is a levy ready to burst upstream. Get it?

Fort Calhoun has six high power lines feeding it - some coming off of a high hill adjacent that comes into the plant at a high angle (hence the no fly zone). Any one of those lines intact will fully power the cooling pools (per the press report in Council Bluffs IA newspaper). They also have generators and onsite fuel to last longer than a month. As to water they have several systems including sophisticated (flood proof) giant sandbags and a "water dam" that could hold back twice the current flood level. So baring a tsunami from a dam break all is well - IMO. They got their asses handed to them a year ago on the flood preps they had so they had been working on it all year - very providential. Don't believe all of the spin out in the blogosphere - I drive by the plant on my way into work every day and live downwind of the plant and have rad detectors - everything has been normal so far.

The Cooper plant is marked by the arrow at the bottom..I'm assuming the levee runs parallel to the road running into Brownsville (Highway 136)

The area of the Cooper plant has been raked by a series of training thunderstorms for hours now, and there's a massive area of moisture on the way. From the looks of the radar, the river levels aren't going anywhere but up, and up fast-

judging by the radar in Omaha it looks like it's been going directly over the plant which looks to be about the same distance S of Omaha

then it goes on to mention the levee in Brownsville (Atchison County)

In Atchison County, there was a nearly steady flow of water over a half-mile stretch of a levee near U.S. 136 and overtopping at various points to the north of that area, said Mark Manchester, deputy director of emergency management for the county. He said the river level in the county had reached 44.6 feet, the highest on record and about 4 to 5 inches higher than 1993 flooding levels.

The water was flooding several thousand acres of farmland, but so far no homes had been inundated since a breach this past Monday caused about a dozen homes to take on water, Manchester said.

Because of the high waters, U.S. 136 was closing near the Missouri-Nebraska border.

He said residents in the area had already evacuated their homes, and officials who operate the levee went up in a helicopter and saw several "pretty good size holes starting to form."

Yeah but your looking at that ALL WRONG. See thats wrong laws of physics they teach in schools. Not the laws of physics where fire can melt steel and buildings can freefall straight down at the rate of gravity and can make un damaged buildings a block away fall down because of sympathy pains. Based on that it doesnt matter if you 25 electrical line and 100 diesel generators it will all fail!......................And not to mention I think in the event of an emergency they are actually designed to get there own power from the steam to keep cool BUT....that will not work either. Its like Bizarro murphys law. Anything that CAN go right is guaranteed to go wrong and go wrong miserably.

So that is a multi unit reactor... how many years of spent fuel are left in those bad boys???

from what I understand it is much smaller than Ft Calhoun and the worst case scenario is also 'much less' then Ft. Calhoun but thats beside the point..

Sorry you feel that way but it was obvious imo from the title of the thread and from the info included in the original post..if you weren't aware that two nuke plants have flooded in Nebraska then you haven't been paying attention..

Ft. Calhoun potentially has 4-5 months to sort out the flooding issues..

Cooper NPS is still operating at FULL CAPACITY with imminent flash flooding LIKELY
