yes, but magma at DEPTH could be being pushed up into the magma chamber? it's the whole subject of that PDF above.

time will tell. if the quakes continue then it might be game on. won't happen right away though, obviously. the magma still has some 50 miles or so to go before it hits the magma chamber, if that is what is causing this.

But going by the co-ords on the Chile site, the big one is in different spot to where the USGS listed it, the smaller ones after are in the same area as Chile have the big one listed.
USGS has also moved the big one quite a distance from the screenie I showed before.

Significant coronal hole in the southern hemisphere(CH457) could produce a powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake during this watch period. Targeting areas 18-23 Degrees and 7-8 Degrees.
Plotting areas at risk for this possible event are Tonga, Loyalty Islands, Potosi, Bolivia or Tarapaca, Chile. Time frame for this June 22-23

Nothing to see here (yet). First of all, its at +120 kms depth, so no big deal on the surface.

Second, its not around Antofagasta or other coastlines, its up in the montains. No tsunami.

Those who asked for volcanoes: Yes, from southern Patagonia all the way up to Colombia. More than 2000 around here, between 200-500 active only in Chile (depends on how you measure it).

Funny thing is, that Calama city was preparing for an EQ drill to be hold on Thursday.


What I personally expect is a large EQ in this region, all between Antofagasta and Southern Peru. Too much stress building up since the last heavy quake, but that's a personal opinion.

Chile is going to be prepared. No nuclear power plants around to blow up.

Close to Calama is the Chuquicamata open-pit mine, the second largest in the world and until recently the mine with the largest annual production in the world, now overtaken by Minera Escondida (also in Chile and close to Antofagasta).

regarding todays shake and from the local news:

He added that both in Calama and in Tocopilla, which in 2007 was affected by an earthquake, "educational institutions and some companies have implemented security plans and carried out preventive evacuations."

The official said "we feel very good that an earthquake of medium intensity are implemented security measures and self-prevention," and that "what we seek is to create a culture of self and this means that people are understanding ".

I see no dramatic increase in Earthquakes.
