The Mars Science Laboratory rover, the most sophisticated robot ever sent to the red planet, carries 4.8 kg (10.6 lb.) of Pu-238 dioxide to fuel its radioisotope thermoelectric generators (RTG). That leaves only a little more than 30 kg. available for future U.S. exploration missions that would be too big or distant to rely on solar power. And for a two-year human trip to Mars and back, the question of surface power is moot because the crew would take on a lethal lifetime dose of space radiation long before they get home.

British nuclear power proposal gets nod
LONDON, Aug. 8 (UPI) -- The British government welcomed a decision by the European Commission to back a nuclear power station in the south of the country.

The European Commission expressed its support for an investment plan by EDF Energy to build its Hinkley Point C nuclear power station. The commission said the plan "fulfills the objectives" of a European atomic energy treaty to develop a sustainable energy mix.

"The U.K. government welcomes this positive development which represents a confident step forward for EDF's plans to build a new nuclear power station at Hinkley Point," a statement read.

Kan slams TEPCO over disclosure of nuclear crisis footage
Former Prime Minister Naoto Kan criticized Tokyo Electric Power Co. on Wednesday for not fully disclosing footage of its in-house teleconferences recorded during the early days of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant crisis.

"The content of the footage is equivalent to exchanges made between the pilot and the airport control tower in the case of an airplane accident...I cannot understand at all why the footage is not being disclosed for reasons such as privacy," Kan, who was prime minister at the time of the disaster, said at the Japan National Press Club.

Edano says gov't will help nuclear-plant-hosting municipalities
Japanese industry minister Yukio Edano expressed readiness Wednesday to protect jobs in municipalities home to nuclear power plants when the government opts to reduce the country's reliance on nuclear energy, pointing to the possibility of using the communities as bases for other sources of energy production given that strong power grids already exist there.

Food from northeast Japan sells in Tokyo
Food products from northeastern Japan were featured at an event in Tokyo to support farmers and fishermen affected by the March 2011 disaster.

People lined up to buy peaches from Fukushima Prefecture and seaweed products from neighboring Miyagi at the Lions Club event on Tuesday in Tokyo.

Items were priced about 30 percent cheaper than the usual market price. The products sold out in 2 hours.

The mayor of Fukushima and food promoters assured buyers that the peaches were safe to eat.

There is no reason to avoid the Products from F'Shima
but only as long as they got checked for a possible
Contamination, the Farmer there are not guilty for
the Accident and should be not held responsible!

TEPCO’s balloon mission in Fukushima Daiichi Reactor 1 unable to be carried out
The plan involved utilizing a camera attached to a balloon which would be placed inside of the reactor building and attempt to provide imagery of the upper floors, but was unable to perform its mission as it was blocked by obstructions.

Nagasaki marks 67th A-bomb anniversary
The city of Nagasaki observed the 67th anniversary of the 1945 US atomic bombing on Thursday.

About 5,600 people, including atomic bomb survivors and victims' families, attended a ceremony held at the Peace Park near ground zero.

US Ambassador to Japan John Roos and a grandson of former US president Harry Truman, who authorized the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, were also in attendance.

The ceremony started with placing an updated list of 158,754 deceased victims at the cenotaph. This contains the names of 3,305 who died or were confirmed dead in the past year.

Japan's exports of farm, marine goods show signs of rebounding
Japan's exports of farm, forestry and marine products rose 4.2 percent in June from a year earlier to 39.8 billion yen, reflecting an increase in exports of marine products to China, the government said Wednesday.

The total value exceeded the figure of 39.1 billion yen posted in June 2010, and for the first time eclipsed the pre-March 2011 disaster level for any month, indicating exports of these products are recovering from the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disasters, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said.

Fall in Tokyo visitor numbers
A survey by the Tokyo metropolitan government shows the number of foreign visitors to the Japanese capital sharply dropped last year. Officials attribute the plunge mainly to the March 11th disaster and the nuclear accident in northeastern Japan.

Tokyo government officials estimate that about 4.1 million visitors came from abroad last year for tourism or on business.

This was down by 31 percent from the year before when the figure hit its highest since the government started surveying in 2004.

Belgium Reactor Monitored for Cracks.
BRUSSELS—Belgium has halted one of its seven nuclear reactors on suspicion that one of its components might be cracked, the country's atomic power regulator said Wednesday.

"We have found anomalies," said Karina De Beule, spokesman for the ACFN, the federal agency for nuclear control. The agency is "evaluating these anomalies, if they can cause cracks," Ms. De Beule said, adding that the 1,006-megawatt Doel 3 reactor will remain shut at least until the end of August.

COLUMBIA GENERATING STATION: LOSS OF EMERGENCY ASSESSMENT CAPABILITY

At 1350 PDT on 08-08-2012, during the performance of an annual surveillance, power supply ARM-E/S-603A was discovered to have out of tolerance voltage readings. ARM-E/S-603A was declared non-functional. This resulted in a loss of the ability to monitor and quantify radiological conditions in multiple areas of the reactor building, due to the loss of ARM-RIS-1 through 10 (Area Radiation Monitor Radiation Indicating Switches 1 through 10).

ARKANSAS NUCLEAR: AUTOMATIC REACTOR TRIP DUE TO HIGH REACTOR COOLANT SYSTEM PRESSURIZER PRESSURE

At 0823 hours on August 8, 2012, Arkansas Nuclear One, Unit 2 (ANO-2) experienced an automatic reactor trip. The reactor automatically tripped due to High Reactor Coolant System Pressurizer Pressure that was caused by a Main Turbine trip due to high condenser back pressure from a degraded vacuum condition. The Reactor Protection System (RPS) performed as designed in response to the High Reactor Coolant System Pressurizer Pressure condition resulting in automatic shutdown of the reactor from approximately 100 percent power.
