A government panel on seismic and volcanic activities has come up with a draft calling for reviewing the research plan through fiscal 2013. The panel says excessive focus on research of earthquake mechanisms and lack of study on evidence of past quakes contributed to the failure to predict the March 11th quake of last year. The deadly earthquake and tsunami devastated coastal areas of Japan's northeastern Tohoku region. [link to www3.nhk.or.jp] . |

About 200,000 tons of radioactive water—enough to fill more than 50 Olympic-sized swimming pools—are being stored in hundreds of gigantic tanks built around the Fukushima Daiichi plant. Operator Tokyo Electric Power Co has already chopped down trees to make room for more tanks and predicts the volume of water will more than triple within three years. [link to www.japantoday.com] . |

Mozambique discovered a large gas field last year with potential deposits equivalent to 15 years of Japanese imports. Additional gas fields have been discovered there. But lack of technology is preventing the country from fully tapping the resources. [link to www3.nhk.or.jp] . |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 24001598 Sweden 10/28/2012 01:19 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Hitachi reportedly to buy UK nuclear reactor venture Horizon TOKYO — Japanese engineering giant Hitachi is set to buy Horizon, a joint venture planning to build nuclear reactors in Britain, in a deal valued at 50 billion yen ($628 million), reports said Saturday. The Japanese firm has nearly finalised an agreement with the firm’s German owners, RWE and E.ON, the Asahi Shimbun newspaper said without citing sources. Hitachi is seeking to expand its nuclear power business overseas after the Fukushima nuclear accident last year effectively wiped out demand for new reactors in Japan, Kyodo News said. Hitachi has teamed up with Canadian engineering firm SNC-Lavalin to make the bid, which is said to be stronger than a rival bid by U.S.-based Westinghouse, controlled by Japan’s Toshiba, the Nikkei newspaper said. Technical support for US nuclear project China is to provide technical support for the first time in the building of a third-generation nuclear power plant in the United States. State Nuclear Power Technology Corp Ltd said on Friday that it had signed a technical support service contract with Shaw Power Group related to the building of the Vogtle AP1000 project in Georgia, the first new reactor approved by the US government in nearly 30 years. The cooperation involves sending Chinese employees to the project over the next four years, with the first batch of six people expected to include planners and electrical engineers, all experienced in building AP1000 projects, commonly known as third-generation reactors. Shaw Group, together with Westinghouse Co, will be responsible for the design, supply and technical support in building reactors No 3 and No 4 at Vogtle, which were approved in February. The Japanese government ordered Kansai Electric Power Company to conduct a geological survey at the nation's only on-line nuclear plant. The company is expected to submit its report to the Nuclear Regulation Authority as early as Wednesday. It will say the underground seam beneath the plant may not be an active fault that could result in an earthquake. [link to www3.nhk.or.jp] . |

But the industry and regulatory officials say that this is an anticipated challenge. At the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s mid-Atlantic office in King of Prussia, Pa., Diane Screnci, a spokeswoman, said that reactors in the region have undertaken routine preparations. “They all have severe weather procedures,’’ she said. “They’ve gone through their procedures, making sure they have appropriate staff able to be on site, and that anything that’s outside is fastened down.’’ [link to green.blogs.nytimes.com] . |

The Unit 2 nuclear reactor at the plant is shut down for routine refueling, but Unit 3 is expected to continue operating through the storm, he said. "There does not appear to be a need at this time to take it off line," he said. "But we are watching the storm track closely." [link to www.theday.com] . |
